I have. I was on the island of Marthas Vineyard. And we dont get sharks out there very often (cept for one great white sighting off of south beach earlier in the summer...funny cause they filmed jaws there)

I was relatively far out maybe three feet past the booeys that were about 40 feet out. (shallow beach) and my friend pointed down and handed me his goggles. And about 7 feet down was a small shark. Not a tiger, mako, blue or white but a shark none the less. I think it was a reef shark. I went about a foot down to look closer (without being too stupid. We didnt follow it and we got out afterwards) and watched it eat a fish. Pretty cool.

I admit it was stupid to get close being untrained but curiosity got the best of me.

Just like when I saw this giant skate (a member of the ray family) in a bay that gets really shallow (in the inches until you go atleast twelve feet out) and there was a huge crowd on the docks and I just hopped into the five inch deep water to get a closer look. It swam over to me and seemed to look up at me. opened its mouth and bubbles came out and then swam away. It was cool.

  1. Yes, I went shark-watching off the coast of South Africa a few years ago. We had several great whites circling our boat. It was pretty cool, but a storm was raging and I was horribly sea-sick, so I couldn't appreciate it all that well! Also our engine died and refused to restart, and we were nearly capsized by the huge waves - we almost ended up getting a much closer look at the sharks than we wanted!

  2. I've been diving with sharks, mainly nurse, bull, tiger and different reef species in Fiji, they are awesome! I was also lucky enought to be around for Manta season and swam with a whole group of Manta rays which were all about 5 meters across.

sharks are beautiful and deserve much more respect than they are given, I hope to catch a sight of some basking sharks over here in Britain as we don't get many native big sharks. I would love to see some great whites up close they are my all time favourite animal.

  3. Yes, while vacationing in the Bahamas on one of those afternoon boat tours with snorkeling.  The guides put some meat in a cage in an area known to have sharks, and then we went swimming.

They were small of course and ignored us.

Frankly the barracuda I saw another time worried me a lot more.

I'm sure many other people have done something similar.

  4. Of course. Here in Florida if more people realized how many sharks we have around (and not even just in the ocean... any brackish water) there would be a lot less people in the water swimming, wadefishing, etc.

Just like with any other animal, there's do's and don't's... but it is always fun to watch the moms freak out when you're at the beach and someone catches a little shark while surf fishing... kinda like yelling "Fire!" in a theater...........

  5. when me and my cousin were surfing at stinson beach in cali i spotted something weird in the water swimming around (my cuz got better look) so of course we quickly high-tailed it out of there and it turned out he said it was a shark he didn't know what kind though
