  1. this one time when i was about 7 or 8 i begged my mom to put me in karate. i only made it to orange belt because i hated my teacher and he gave a student a higher belt just because he cried. it really pissed me off...

  2. Nope.

I received good instruction, but both instructors were just lazy as h**l.

What we learned, we did not practice enough, and what we practiced, we never learned well unless only a few students showed.

Ultimately though it was a club not a school.

  3. There are thousands that teach "chop suey". Too many people get tricked into these classes because they don't realize that they have choices. I have been teaching Choy li fut style Kung Fu and Yang family Tai Chi for 35 yrs. You should ask a school if they will offer you a first class free or some kind of introductory course for a small fee. This way, you can see if you like it. Then, (this is where people fail) ask the guy who his teacher is/was, is he still alive and can I call him. Don't be afraid - yeh, this guy is a "master" or "sensei" or "sifu" - whatever, he's also a guy trying to get your money. Verify who he is - - - he's not going to hurt you - - he's a business man!  If he gets an attitude, he's not for real and you shouldn't be with him anyway -

  4. I went to an Aikido school where it turned out... that the teacher learned everything he knew from video tapes to a test in Chicago and got his black belt. I felt so betrayed by that. He taught us cool looking techniques, that would have gotten us ktfo in the street.

He tried to teach us kata and his reason for why we did kata is that they look cool. Nowadays I know that kata actually serve a greater purpose in martial arts and am with an awesome sensei who is teaching me amazingly.

  5. Every public school/dojo I've ever been to has been laughable. When I was younger and ignorant I wanted to go into each class and challenge the best of their school and fight everybody proving that these instructors were frauds.

Now, I just quietly shake my head and show a glimpse of the truth behind what they're studying, for inspiration of the search and discovery for their individual self.
