Lots of people do this and its very common.  Most of the time collection agencies will balk at first.  They don't like to have to do this.  Granted the CRAs are not supposed to removed tradelines for valid debt, but this method is the ONLY way in which you should EVER pay a collection agency once it is on your credit report.  The collection agency that inserted the tradeline is in full control of whether it stays or goes, not the CRAs.

The best way to do this is not via letter.  Call on one of the last days of the month when collection agency reps are trying to meet their monthly quotas.  Tell them you can pay them before the end of the month, but they have to delete the tradeline.  Have them fax a SIGNED agreement to that effect, then give them the money to make their quota.  You may have to call several times and speak to several different representatives.  Be firm but not rude.  Do not allow yourself to be pushed around.  You will have to be willing to pay via telephone to keep up your end of the bargain.  The closer you are to the end of the month, the more likely you are to be able to negotiate a pay for delete.  Best of luck.

I've attempted this a number of times and the creditors don't seem to like them.  They often don't respond because the 3 credit bureaus don't allow them to delete valid debts for payment.  This makes sense when you think about it.  Imagine if everyone just paid off their past due debts to have them deleted from their credit reports.  Everyone would have A+ credit.

Do you mean when you're in debt and you'll trying to negotiate the bill and get it removed from your credit history?

I haven't done it but my boyfriend is making deals with a hospital in Florida right now to do this. As long as it goes to a collection agency you can do this otherwise the letter will just be tossed out.
