I was once on Grand Jury duty, I was at the courthouse all day, and then I had to go into work at night, I was the only Mechanic at the shop. Now that wore me out! I only remember one case, a 12 year old that was having relations with an older teen, we sent it to be prosecuted, I don't know what happened to it after that.

  1. Served on a capital murder trial, couldn't get a death sentence, although I tried. Life without parole.  Thrown out on appeal.  New jury same sentence.  Basically wasted a very stressful week.

  2. Yes, both in civil life and in the military (as a member of a Court Martial Board).

In both cases, it was an example of democracy at its finest -- honest citizens doing their collective best to ensure justice was done.

I noticed one supreme irony: the jury is the worst-paid of anyone present in the courtroom. The jury does the most honest work. <g>

  3. Served on a criminal jury twice...the first time we sent a child molestor to jail for 50 years.  That felt pretty good.

  4. Yup. Grand Jury for a year - didn't seem to do much but meet and write reports. Criminal trial for a day. And a couple of civil trials. Nothing like TV or the movies.

  5. yep. Let a crook off due to circumstantial evidence. All we wanted was the actual footprint that was on the scene, but they didn't have it. No one was happy about it.

  6. I was a Juror for 6 weeks in a Civil case. The defendant was suing a major railroad company for injuries on the job and discrimination, etc. etc. seeking damages of 1 million dollars. We awarded the defendant 1.2 million sending a very clear message that the behaviors of large corporate discrimination will not be tolerated in society. It was a very interesting and fascinating case. I would do it again but the money is not good as a juror.

  7. Juries are how ordinary citizens pay for other peoples crimes.

  8. Have had jury duty a few times and each time I reported, all the cases were plea bargained so we sat around all day for nothing.

  9. No, conflict of interest

  10. I was called for selection one but wasn't picked because my husband was a police office and it was considered a conflict of interest because I might be biased.

  11. I am the only person in my family that hasn't been contacted for duty but he way that jury duty is structured where I live and with my work schedule there is no way I could serve.  I work on an oil rig 21 days on and 21 days off.  The way that jury duty is scheduled here is you have one day a week that you report for selection.  You call in the night before and see if you are needed the next day and this goes on for 6 months.  I wouldn't be able to work for the entire period.  If I do get called, I hope the judge would let me report on several days while I am in the country.
