Have you ever sold a painting? How old were you? Does anyone here make a living as a painter

We've all heard about how hard it is to make a living as a painter but I'm curious to know if anyone here actually does. How old were you when you sold your first piece? How much did you sell it for? What do you sell for now?

(Sorry for the multiple questions packed in)

  1. When I was in my teens, I could have been an artist.  My art teacher then was James Cockburn and was also a professional artist.  He was selling his paintings for around GBP 300 - 400 for a canvas a little less than 1 sq m.  He would have exhibitions at libraries and occasionally in galleries.  He advised me not to be an artist because it is really difficult to make a living that way and that's why he had to teach art as well as do his painting.  As it happens, I did continue to paint for a while and did sell similar sized pieces for a little less on commission basis.  That was in the early 80s.  I believe my art teacher never did become a full time painter as he always also taught as well as paint.  I no longer paint much but still dabble for enjoyment and probably have given away as many paintings as people have paid for.  Follow the link source to see some of James' work.

  2. I have sold a couple of paintings. But I sell more 3D art. It is very difficult to make a living from selling paintings only. But there are a few artists that do. Most artists do additional things to secure a living. Some provide a service related to the art or a creative venue. I started a furniture restoration business. It required an artistic ability as well as craftsmanship.  I can’t do that now for health reasons so I make 3D items like small sculptures and jewelry.

You can always try to do what you love. It requires education, training and lots of practice. Don’t give up the dream—Go for it!

  3. I had my senior art exhibit at the college and sold my two artworks...one  a mix-media art piece that sold for 100.00 and a eagle print that sold for 35.00...and.  So i sold about two pieces. woot! I am 25 by the way. And it all depends on the size and time you spent on it, If i spent so many ages on painting and if it was bigger that 18 x 24 i would sell it for more.

  4. It takes a rare combination of skill and marketing to make a living as an artist without a "day job" I have sold quite a few paintings (starting a age 13 to a neighbor). I also have an art gallery, frame shop, and internet business selling art.

Look at Thomas Kinkade; not my particular taste in art, but a marketing miracle.

  5. Such a lot of questions!

    Yes I do.

I  began selling when I was around 21.

Can't remember what I sold it for, not much.

A 60 x 80cm will go for between $1,000 and $5,000, they average at around $2,000. They would be more, but my career was interrupted by illness.

I usually sell at least one a week. Last month I sold $12,000 worth in a two week period.
