  1. It is the worst kind of pain, back pain.  It affects every aspect of your life, from sleeping to picking something up.  I used to train in Aikido and because of the constant rolls and break falls my upper back became very weak.  Every other month I was off due to several of my muscles getting pulled in-between my shoulder blades.  In the end I had to stop training in Aikido, gutting really because I really enjoyed it.  I tend to concentrate on my Thai and kickboxing now.

The last time I seriously hurt my back was when I was sparring, we both went in for a Thai clinch and the guy just yanked my head down.  I felt it go but the pain wasn't that bad.  I went to bed and I woke up in the early hours in unbelievable pain, so I went down stairs to hang myself from my pull up bar to relieve the pressure.  But I decided to go to the toilet first, big mistake.  After I had finished on the toilet I turned around and the pain became unbearable.  It was so bad that I passed out and ko myself out on the bath.  I had a huge cut on my left eye brow, there was blood everywhere and the pain was still intense.  It resulted in a night in hospital and 4 months of therapy before I healed, that was the last time it went.  I now take great care of my back, building the strength and using lots of yoga moves.

I can get to sleep however; it just requires a lot of concentration and zero movement.  I double up on the pillows and only lie on my side; pain killers and cold compression take care of the rest.

  2. One more thing: Excedrin Back & Body is a wonderful pain reliever for those injuries. Make sure you get checked out by a doctor (not a chiropractor) before you start any treatment as you may do more damage.

    Be careful.

  4. Many times ... and I couldn't even turn my head.  Horrible.

It took lots and lots of time to heal, but I also use deep tissue massage therapy, cold gel packs (to reduce the swelling), Advil (pain killer) and lots of chiropractic treatments.

    Time...

And I do know exactly how you feel ... hope I don't feel that way again anytime soon... Best of wishes to feel better.

  5. I have  severe damage in my lower back due to being the "uke" for 14 years.

I had spinal decompression therapy along with chiropractic and exercise physiology.

The spinal decompression was done on a traction machine called VAX-D. Vertebral AXial Decompression.

It literally pulls your spine to allow the the discs to allow the release of pressure against the the spinal cord and nerves.

The action of the pulling helps the disc go back to its normal shape. If you prolong neglecting the condition, you can get permanent damage to your disc.

It's pretty costly but the results definitely outweight the cost.

There are newer machines now like the SpineMed, which is based on the VAX-D technology.

Dude, you will love me in a few months - but only if you get it treated.
