I live in a coastal, port city. In the four weeks I have lived here, I have taken some serious notice to the Coast Guard and how often they go out there into the North Atlantic to pull people out. Talk about unsung heroes.

  1. I live in Florida and yes, it is their job.

  2. People who don't live on the coast rarely get a good glimpse at the job the Coast Guard does.

How many people know that the Coast Guard had people serving in Vietnam?

  3. I lived in Florida on the gulf coast and they called to rescue people on a daily basis.  Yes I agree.

  4. www.uscg.mil/history

  5. Yes. They are unsung heroes. Especially when the emergency radio call from those in distress indicates a position of "we're out here on the water". So, they first have to find them and then rescue them. Here's the fact that will blow your mind. They do all of that rescue, port security in this Long War and carry out drug interdiction operations all with a total force which numbers less than the number of uniformed police on the streets of New York City. When they moved them to the Department of Homeland Security, the Congress should have authorized a doubling of their strength!
