The movies use the 555-prefix when dialing any number.  These numbers aren't assigned by the telephone companies for that reason.

If I need to speak to some department within the phone company.....I remember that 411 was for local directory assistance, and (area code +) 555-1212 was for out-of-area directory assistance.

At one time before all the deregulation of the Bell System and even the babies used

area code+555-1212 for out of the area directory assistance
