  1. Yes, I used Family Tree DNA

I believe they are the best, I certainly am very happy with them, they are the oldest established company of it's type,

established in 1999, and the largest, they do all the testing for the National Geographic's Genome Project. Their after service is excellent. Their prices are very competitive and if you join one of their surname projects, free, you will also get discounted prices. Give their site a visit.

  2. Yes.  I also used Family Tree for both the German group and the surname group.  When there are new results that aproach matching your "markers" they email you so that you can check it out.  Drawbacks--my surname group is small, and most of the matches don't include a family tree, leading me to believe they use the test for other reasons.

  3. Yes, I did this through the National Geographic's National Genographic Project.  I think the main thing is that it helps me to truly understand that all human beings are "brothers", we are all related because we came from the same beginnings.

With the results of my swabs, I also received a CD describing the research done to find the "missing links" - for example, to show that Australian aborigines share some of the same DNA as some tribe(s) of India, proving that the Aussies' ancestors slowly, slowly travelled via Indonesia from India to Australia.  This sort of stuff is really exciting.

  4. Yes; I used www.familytreedna.com.  They sent me a test kit with 2 swabs, I swabbed the insides of my cheeks with both swabs, sent it back and about 2 - 3 weeks I received a written report.  I also have my own page on their website, complete with maps, women who are "close" on the mtDNA, men who are "close" on the yDNA and so much information.  What I always enjoy reading (besides the maps) is the list of countries where ancestors originated, both for mtDNA (mother to mother) and yDNA (father to father).

DNA has many drawbacks; it does not show "side trees" but only direct.  It will not provide names of ancestors, birthdates and all that; BUT it WILL show/tell you where your ancestors came from.

Mine are now shown for all the continents (except Antarctica!) and islands in the Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean, North Sea, and Carribbean.

    I think it is exciting!

And they offer you the chance to join the National Geographics Genotype Program, http://www-03.ibm.com/industries/healthc... https://www3.nationalgeographic.com/geno... https://www3.nationalgeographic.com/geno... and other websites.

    Good luck and have fun!
