  1. I can assure you Guatemala it's an amazing experience!

Your first must-see is Antigua... I've known many people that came for vacations or work and stayed for years... it's the ancient Guatemala City, it has everything, ruins, old temples, lots of museums, fine dining, bars, people are very friendly, a lot of tourists and very safe. There are plenty of spanish schools...

Then, you should go to Tikal, it's an antique Mayan City, you'll be amazed with the monumentality (if such word exists) of the temples...

There is also Lake Atitlan, it's a lake sursounded by twelve villages, in each one you'll find hiking, museums and friendly people.... It has a special charm!

You should also go to Rio Dulce, it's a river that flows into the Atlantic Ocean, you can take a boat there to Livingston, it's a white-sanded and turquoised-water beach, there is also Punta de Palma, Cayos del Diablo and many other places to meet...

Another great place is Coban, it's a wet forest area, there is Semuc Champey, Candelaria Caves, Lanquin and many other places that give a terrific example of what nature has to offer...

In the Pacific Coast, there is Monterrico, it's one of toursits' favorite beaches, it has a layed-back mood, warm weather, one of the best pizza places to eat in Guatemala....

In Guatemala City, you will find museums, malls and great accomodations...

  2. I went there and stayed for over three years, so yes, I liked it.  Antigua is a great place to make a home base, its safe, relatively clean, quiet, yet its fun and there are things to do.

Lake Atitlan is amazingly beautiful and only 2 hours away from Antigua.  The Pacific coast is famous for sport fishing, the sand is black (volcanic) on the beaches and the surf is rough, so beware if you go.

Tikal is amazing, a must see, incredible temples.

Semuc Champey, near Coban is probably the most amazing natural pools I have ever seen, its hard to do it justice with mere words, so look up some images to get an idea of what the place is all about.

The Northwest of the country is interesting, Xela (Quetzaltenango) is a big city, lots to see and do, very interesting Mayan city.

Todos Santos Cuchumatan in Hueheutenango Department is a time machine back.  If you will be there November 1st you can see the crazy drunken horse races, which are a trip.

There is a major pilgramage site in Esquipulas to see a Black Christ statue with a huge line outside, not much else to see in the town though.

Chichcicastenango has a famous market Thursdays and Sundays which is good for souvenier buying.

These are only a few ideas of things to do, and I know I have left a bunch out, but good luck and send a message if you have any specific questions.
