Have you ever wished there were more places you could buy affordable Jamaican 'home cooked' meals in Kingston, Jamaica? These days it amazes me how much $$$ people put into buying BK and KFC, even in the middle of the night. Traditional Jerk Chicken or pan chicken vendors aren't even as popular. Where can you buy real Jamaican Steamed fish at 1am in the morning these days?

  1. No where, however the inner city, Waltham Park Rd to be exact has little restaurants that serves fried chicken, curried goat, stewed beef, ox tail, with rice and peas or plain rice, according to the menu, up to midnight.

However, you have to be brave and equally hungry to visit at midnight.

  2. I don't eat that much fast food anymore. That would be great if they had less fast food restaurants and more regular or healthier restaurants with healthy food.

  3. its the government clamping down on street vendors too!

    don't like island grill

  4. You are absolutely right! I am from Mandeville.I came to Jamaica in June this year and I was appalled to see how Jamaicans have bought into the American lifestyle of fast foods. I really liked alot of the changes but I am not too sure if the fast food industry was one of them!

  5. Yea, we need more restaurants that cook ackee and saltfish and dumplings with green bananas, curry goat and mackerel rundown lol. Jerk food is good too...way better than BK or KFC. I wish we had an Island Grill in Manchester :/

  6. I think that American restaurants are getting quite popular in Kingston. The Friday's is always crowded, and the BK in Halfway Tree same thing again. I however very rarely eat fast food in Jamaica, I think the food(real food) is cheaper in Jamaica versus Miami. Box food here in Jamaica is about 350JMD if that( about 5.00 USD), whereas in Miami a box food is 10.00 USD...

Pan chicken is still a popular night-time after the club food selection.

Jamaica still has its appeal as far as homestyle food, little ochi and all the seafood there, can not be found in Miami.

Island Grill (which is just okay, not the best) etc...

  7. Yes!!!   I can eat that FKn BK n KFC anwhere.  When i am in Jamaica I want to taste the local taste and support local workers, suppliers, cooks and businesses.  I haven't been to Kingston, but There were still some small independents regularly accessible in MoBay, and on out toward Falmouth that i loved and went to regularly.

I also go out of my way for regional specialties like the pepper shrimps and bammy in Middle Quarters!

I think it is the spoiled American Palate that won't be adventurous and wants exactly what they want when at home....EVERYWHERE  IN THE WORLD!!
