Have you ever yelled at a cashier?

I've been yelled at so many times as a cashier.

I just got yelled at today, I forgot to void an item on her bill, I admit it, it was my fault, but she was also looking at the d**n screen to check if everything else was going in properly too (because she bought everything on sale), don't know why she didn't catch it either. I apologized for, obviously, and her husband called me stupid for doing that, I was so upset.

just wondering if anyone has yelled at a cashier like it's the end of the world? and if you think it's right to do it to an extent where you end up insulting the cashier?

  1. No, nothing ever got solved by yelling.  You can accomplish a lot more with a very low tone.  Yelling is out.

  2. Sorry to hear that, being a cashier must suck sometimes. No, I've never yelled at a cashier, i've been annoyed before but usually it is not because of them but because I'm having a bad day. I try not to take it out on them.(; A friend of mine was a cashier and he had to deal with some real losers too sometimes.

  3. Some people are so wrapped up in themselves that they think they are the only ones who matter.  They treat everyone else like idiots, but they are the ones who are morons.  Sorry you had a bad day.  I treat everyone with respect no matter what they are doing for a living.  Hey, I'm a college graduate, a nurse, and spend a good part of my work day cleaning bowel movements off other peoples butts.  How glamorous is that???

  4. I'm sorry you were yelled at and made to feel bad.  No, I have never yelled at a cashier before.  But there was once instance where I was very upset over the price of diapers not showing up at the sale price.  (I guess because only CERTAIN sizes of Pampers go on sale while the other sizes remain regular priced)  The cashier called for the manager, and he resolved the problem.  I don;t believe anyone needs to be yelled at for something as petty as not scanning a coupon or voiding something.  It's a petty mistake, and you are only human!  The problem can be rectified at the customer service counter.

  5. NEVER!!!!

I have been a cashier, I have also worked in many customer service related fields...I always treat service workers with respect and dignity.

When I'm getting frustrated with a company's infrastructure or policies and the only person I can talk to is the cashier or the poor person answering the phone at the call center, I always apologize in advance that I might sound upset, tell the person that I'm NOT upset with them, I give all the information possible and hope that they can either help or point me in the right direction.

It usually works.  Especially, I think, because I make sure to treat people with respect, and let them know that I appreciate their assistance.

A little bit of common courtesy goes a long way.

EDIT:  And to be clear, you did everything right in the transaction you had to deal with; your customers were jerks.  We all know that the customer is always right, but they are also, from time to time, A**holes.

So...you get to sleep at night knowing you did the right thing.  They may or may not sleep, given that there's prolly a LOT more wrong in their lives than an item on their bill...Looks like you win!!!

You are now free to take the moral high-ground.

  6. hey ... I've been on your side of the counter ... and there is NO way I would yell at a cashier.......

Infact.. I make a point of being as polite and friendly as I possibly can.. ESPECIALLY if the customer before me has been obnoxious and unpleasant.....

I am sure that a rude and surly cashier might raise the wrath of a customer .. but I have never had that experience.. treat people as you would like to be treated is my theory..

people who make a habit of looking down on cashiers and treating them as if they were a piece of dog-doo-doo on the soles of their shoes are job-snobs and utterly rude.

Don't worry .. MOST people appreciate nice cashiers.. Karma will bite that woman and her hubby on the bum.

  7. NOOO! I hate how customer think that your life is to serve them. Its hard to be cashier especially if your new and if you make a mistake they glare at you as if theyre gonna kill. I had a bad experience once at work...

I work at a photo place and someone called and asked when they could come in to get a passport photo... I told him that I could do it as long as he comes at 5pm (half and hour before closing time) because it takes time to measure the photo correctly blah blah...So ends up coming at 5:28pm when ive turned off the printer and literally closing the door and hes asking me to do his passport photo. I told him i couldnt because It was closing time so he got so angry and pretty much demanded that I turn the machines back on and that I take his photo and told me couldnt do my job properly! I ended up calling security coz he wouldnt leave...what a jerk.

  8. Console yourself with the knowledge that you were the better person. I would never stoop to letting something that petty cause me to lose control, and you handled the situation just right.

You could consider in future asking "What more was it you were wanting me to do?" Maybe it will provide a reality check, while you can't be criticized because you are still attempting to remedy the situation.

  9. No I have never done that because I used to work as a cashier.

Your customers fail to recognize how narcissistic and ill tempered they are.  They would never put up with that behavior if they were the cashier.

Please try not to let them get to you.  It isn't your fault they are having a bad day.  Or a bad life, as the case may be  ;)

And I know he failed to say it so I will say it for him: I'm sorry he called you stupid.  Smile and be happy that those self absorbed people aren't at your register every day.

I will share my biggest horror story quickly.  A guy came through my register and his credit card was declined.  The bank instructed me to take the card.  At the time, I didn't know I should just cut it up in front of him. I was going to put it in my cash drawer and send it up to the office and let them send it back to the bank.. He started pitching a fit and I had to call the cops.

  10. No I have never yelled at a cashier. I used to be a cashier myself and I got yelled at for no reason. Usually it was by someone that was mentally ill.  I used to work in the downtown area of the city that I live in, and downtown is huge where I live because I live in a big city. Beleive me you get all kinds of people when you work downtown.  I don't know why people take everything out on the cashier. Some people would complain because they thought that something was on sale and when I would ring them up it wasn't , and you get a lot of complaints. They should direct those to the manager so that they could take the sale sign down.

  11. I am sorry you had to deal with those nasty people.

I have never yelled at a cashier.  However, there have been times when I have been unpleasant.  If I was rude and realized I had no cause to be, I immediately apologized.

I don't know if you are in a position to do so, but can you look for another job?  Your workplace sounds toxic, and there does not appear to be anyone, like a supervisor, who is standing up for you.

  12. when your in  customer relations you will stumble across the most insulting and rude people.  It's just part of the job and no reflection on you.  They have issues and you just have to renember that they are the ones who have a problem not you.

  13. if you handled yourself gracefully they will be embarassed later hopefully.

It is unacceptable to be treated that way.  But i suspect those kinds of things don't happen that often so blow it off and try to do better.

  14. Yes-not a cashier per se. At a burger place the guy that takes the order at the drive thru is the same one that makes change and gives the food.I used to have hay fever real bad. I used to sneeze uncontrollably up to at least 60 times in a row and get nosebleeds all the time.I hate raw onions on my burgers. I go to great lengths to make certain that they know NOT to put the d**n things on my food. Those things make the whole burger taste like raw onion. I can't just take it off and be fine that way, I can still smell it and taste it.

So one day I was having one of these attacks at the same time my two stepsons were getting on my nerves. The guy asked me what I wanted and I told him a double cheeseburger WITH NO ONIONS! I then repeated to him to make sure there were NO ONIONS on it.He then read the order back to me and he said no onions on the double.I again said to make sure there were NO ONIONS and told him I hate the d**n things. He said OK he would make sure.

Well All the burgers came with onions. The truck reeked of onion. It smelled like an onion truck. At this time my hay fever flared up and I slammed on the brakes as we were pulling out of the drive thru. I jerked it into reverse and squealed back to the window.I screamed at the guy a number of things that I cannot type here and put my fist into the burger and threw it at him.He saw that I was enraged as all my veins were sticking out and my wife was holding me back with all her strength to keep from getting out of the truck and jumping through the little window and going after the guy.

I made them re make the complete order from scratch.

They were much faster the second time too-and they managed to make the order WITH NO ONIONS!

I am usually more tolerant. It was the hay fever and the kids gnawing on my last nerve.

  15. i'd say "you stupid *****, im a cashier, i don't need this ****'

No, id never yelled at a cashier cause it's not tht important

  16. I have never yelled at a cashier. I may have sounded a bit agitated but never yelled.  I never get upset if a price doesn't come up right or if the computer or register didn't give the right price.  These people are just cashiers.  There are many other people who work in the stores and sometimes they don't do the job they are supposed to.  Who gets blamed by the customer?  The cashier.  Now I have gotten upset when a cashier found it necessary to talk on the phone while completing my sale.  It was rude and I told her about it.  Other than that if I have a problem I just ask for management.

  17. No, I've never had a reason to, but I don't think I'm that type of person.

  18. i only yelled at a cashier once because i ordered 4 burgers and they only gave me 2 and the cashier called me a liar and said i was lying about paying for 4 burgers, so i yelled at her stupid @ss and shoved the receipt in her face.  i would never yell at a cashier over something little like what you said in your question.  but if they cross the line first and insult me by calling me a liar, you better believe i will yell at them.

  19. No, I never yell at a cashier. If they make a mistake, I give them time to correct it and if they are unable to do it then I would speak to the manager for further assistance.

    Thanks for asking.

  20. Don't let jerks like that get to you. Look at how sad it is that they have to buy everything on sale and then get their ego boost from yelling at a stranger. You apologized and then corrected your error, they need to get over themselves. Next time someone does this, smile like they've just given you the best compliment of your life and kill them with sickening sweetness. They want to get a rise out of you, don't give it to them. Sometimes they'll even apologize. I was a cashier once and I had some crabby folks as well. I've never yelled at a cashier, but a few times I've gotten really annoyed --like when they turn around and start chatting with coworkers and ignore me and my transaction completely, etc.

  21. I've been short with cashiers but I have never yelled.  I have been checked out by some pretty lousy cashiers too.  Some of them don't give a hoot about what you say.  I always ask to have ALL of my refrigerated groceries kept separate because I have to leave the rest of them in the car for my husband because of a health issue I have and do you think they listen?  I even tell them why while I'm sitting in my trolley cart.  Sometimes I have to take in 2 or three extra bags because there's a couple of yogurts mixed in with the canned foods etc.  They're lucky I don't yell.

  22. No, I have never yelled at a cashier, or anyone for doing there job for that matter, and I am a manager.  I deal with employees and customers who make mistakes, it happens, even big ones.  The best way to deal with the situation would have been for the woman to point out the mistake, accept your apology and refund and leave.  If she was truly upset and felt wronged, she could have spoken to the manager in private.  The outcome would be the same if she yelled at you or not, so why be a jerk about it?  She clearly did not take the high road, made it a public problem when it was nobody business and you suffered for it.  Unfortunately, that happens all too often in retail.

Shake it off, smile at the next customer and keep doing your job.  Hopefully the next customer will be a much better experience.

  23. No, but I've taken the time to complain about one to the manager of the store after the transaction.  He kept talking on his cell phone as he was waiting on me and then got snippy with me when I asked him to put his phone call on hold and complete my transaction.

Everyone makes mistakes, but I can't abide rudeness.

  24. No, I have never yelled at a cashier because I used to be one in high school.  Don't let those people get to you.  I know it sucks that you have to be nice to those wankers no matter what but if you remain calm and try your best, then they look like the @sshole in the end.  And trust me, it could be worse.  I thought nothing could get any worse until I worked for a call center as a customer service rep for the claims department of an HMO.  I would get yelled at, cussed out, screamed at, called every name in the book, all day, every day.  You just gotta learn how to not let things like that bother you and go about your business.
