Have you experienced the Glo?

What are your opinions on those bright, active little Glofish? The website says they get their color from their parents, and the research that I found said they're glowy because of genetic splicing or something like that. Still, they kinda remind me of those "painted" glass fish that were in all of the pet stores a few years ago. (For those who don't know what the "painted" glass fish were, they were glass fish that were anesthetized and injected with dyes around their fins. They typically lost their color within days or weeks of arriving in the consumer's aquarium. It is now illegal to sell them in most places since it is animal cruelty.) What do you think about these Glofish? I still prefer the natural beauty of the neon tetras and gouramis best :O)

  1. I have a few of them - they're basically glorified zebra danios, which I like as well. They bring a little added color to my 40 gallon community tank, and they're happy-go-lucky little guys, just like the zebras.

Personally I wouldn't purchase the painted fish - I think that injecting them with dye is painful and cruel. As far as the genetically changed fish, since they are hatched the color that they are, I don't find it to be cruel. Whether or not it's an ethical issue to modify their genes (and I do understand the reasons behind it), is another issue altogether.
