Beggars and Kings

In the evening

all the hours that weren't used

are emptied out

and the beggars are waiting to gather them up

to open them

to find the sun in each one

and teach it its beggar's name

and sing to it It is well

through the night

but each of us

has his own kingdom of pains

and has not yet found them all

and is sailing in search of them day and night

infallible undisputed unresting

filled with a dumb use

and its time

like a finger in a world without hands

  1. You made me cry, Buk.  I have found what I've been looking for all my life but it is beyond my grasp.

    Banish Air from Air—

    Emily Dickinson

    Banish Air from Air—

    Divide Light if you dare—

    They'll meet

    While Cubes in a Drop

    Or Pellets of Shape

    Fit

    Films cannot annul

    Odors return whole

    Force Flame

    And with a Blonde push

    Over your impotence

    Flits Steam.

  5. All of us are beggars and kings, and some throw their crowns in the dump.  Thanks for a blast from the past.  Love to wait around to see who shows up to criticize.

  6. Its so interesting how this poem challenges all rules of punctuation; offering not a single little symbol. Yet, being so deep, with such mtaphor, its so light, clear, and transparent. If you didn't mention the name of the poet (Mervin or Merwin), I 'd 'v said that its yours; your expressions , your imagery, your eloquent style. Thanks

  7. A poem about beggars written by a king among poets

offered to us by my own favorite prince.

    Thanks, Buk

  8. You mean that you want me to show my age and my ignorance?

Here's one I missed until last year. This one made me rethink everything, including my lack of education.
