Question:

Have you got a lock on your bedroom door ?

I'm a 15 year old girl and I haven't got a lock on my bedroom door.

In the past, I have bought it up with my mum but I remember her saying no - which I think was irresponsible.

Personally, I think she should have just put one on there without even asking me. Then it would be my choice whether I wanted to use it or not.

What do you think ?

May I also add, that I have a 20 year old brother that think it's perfectly acceptable to come in my room when ever he feels like it. Without even knocking. He will just walk in and lay down on my bed. Invasion of privacy or what !

  1. Well I wouldn't really use the term irresponsible. My older daughter has one of those flip plate things on the inside of her door that she uses if she is getting changed, and because we have a 5 year old that she doesn't want in her room all the time.

Maybe just ask her again and state the reason like you did here. Your brother probably just doesn't even think anything of it. Maybe you could ask him to knock in case you are getting dressed.

Or you could just make a sign to put on your door, maybe he will get the hint.

  2. i never had a working lock while living with my mother but i was an only child there.  At my dads house i had a step brother and i had a lock there.  I had to use it quite often so you should ask your mum again .

  3. I have a lock on mine. i dont really use it but when i do i usually get in trouble.

  4. Okay, I'm 13 and HAVE a lock. That's weird. I use it when I'm changing or just coming out of the shower. I'd kill my mom is she didn't let me use it. Tell her that you're 15 and deserve your privacy. If she STILL says no, perhaps then make rules, like you can have your door closed and the must knock and wait for your permission to come in. Or you can have your door closed they knock and if you say just a minute then they wait for you to open it and if you say nothing or come in then they can come in. But my mom used to just walk in without knocking and I'd be changing and just scream at her so we came to an agreement, I could lock my door if I was changing or just got out of the shower.

  5. No, and the friends I have that do aren't allowed to use it.

They are twelve and most have siblings [:

  6. im 16 and i have a lock on my door. my younger brother and sister both had locks on their doors but my mom took them off (hahaha sucks for themmm). basically i only use my lock when im changing..my stepdad sort of freaks out when i use my lock slash even close my door (wtf??) but my door is basically always closed so whatever.

  7. my dad thought it would be funy to put it on the wrong way so now the locks on the outside

  8. I'm fifteen and I do in fact have a bedroom lock, both mine and my parents room does, which I think is a great idea for them because I don't have to worry about just opening the door and walking in on them having their make up s*x, lol.

I do use the lock when I'm changing my clothes because honestly my dad never knocks. Ever. Even if say, the bathroom door is closed and my mom might be in there or even a relative he'll just open it anyway because he thinks he doesn't have a reason to knock because he considers it his house. I have to beg to differ saying it's mom's house, but I'll stop right there.

I also do use the lock when my parents aren't home and I'm going to be home myself the whole night and I'll tell you, having that lock gets rid of my paranoia being at home, since I'm so worried of someone breaking in the house and kidnapping/raping me. The lock gives me some sense of security (along with my cell phone, lol).

It's also used when my mother wants to retreat to my room when my dad and her are fighting or when my dad's picking a fight with me and it gets so scary that I feel the need to lock myself in my room because I'm so afraid, but that's another story.

Honestly, all I can say is try to have a mature discussion about this with your mom telling her why you want the lock on your bedroom door. Maybe talk to her about the issue with your brother not knocking before he enters a room and see what you can do about it.

  9. By saying she is being irresponsible, you are implying that you are being put at some sort of risk?  If the risk is just your brother coming in, I hardly think that your mother is being irresponsible.  Some might even say it would be irresponsible to put a lock on your door.  It is very common for mother to not want locks on their 15 year old girls door - I wasn't allowed one when I was your age.  In fact, some mothers would even consider it irresponsible to put one on - and yes, there is an actual risk.  Of you becoming overly emotional and refusing to come out, or of you bringing a boy in your room.  Unfortunately (for you), while mom is paying the mortgage or rent, you have to go by her rules, and your privacy will never be what you want it to be.  I know you like calling it "your room", but it really isn't.  At 15, I really hope you have no other reason for wanting a lock on your door other than the fact that you don't want your brother walking in on you when you are changing.  Suck it up, and look forward to living on your own!  With true privacy comes a lot of bills (rent, food, cable, phone, electric, gas, water, maintenance, etc) - maybe living in mom's house for the time being is not such a bad idea!

  10. Well if you brought it up in the past, maybe you should try asking her again, and explain to her why you need one. I have a lock on my door but my door doesn't really shut so you can just push it and it opens. I have to put something in front of it so it will stay shut. I have 4 younger sisters so it kinda would be nice if my door locked and kept other people out...

  11. I'm almost 15, and I've got a lock on my door...

  12. I'm a bit younger than you and I've always had a lock on my door. My dad does exactly what your brother does! I hate it too.

Tell your mom that you feel you need more privacy. Show her you are responsible and no one is respecting your space.

  13. Dress in the bathroom where there is a lock.

My friend only had a lock on the outside of her door since her brother would come in and steal stuff from her when she wasn't home. But she couldn't lock it when she was in her room.

  14. I'm 14 and when I get home my mom is installing a lock on my door so when I am changing or getting ready i can lock it and get dressed knowing no one can come in!

  15. I have a lock. I don't spend enough time in my room to use it though.

Some parents are really strict about havign locks... some arent. sometimes  when the house was built they just didnt put a lock in, and perhaps they think its a waste to spend the money to do it, when it isnt really necessary.

Just talk to your brother about it, if he doesn't stop, then you can try to talk to your parents about it.maybe you can save your money to have a lock put in.

  16. My mom would never have let me have a lock on my bedroom door when I was a teen. She could only imagine what trouble I'd get into. If you brother is walking in without knocking, talk to your mom about it.

  17. I'm almost 16...

& have had a lock on my door for about 2 years now

I live with 3 older brothers and a little sister who does the same thing

So my door is normally locked a lot

    =]

  18. Yeah, I have always had a lock on my bedroom door.

  19. i have one, but it's broken, and it sucks!  just ask her again. make a long list of the pros of having one.  :)

  20. im 16 and i have a lock....but it came on the door when we moved in a while ago...its never been a big deal. i can see why you'd want a lock though...talk to your mom about you brother. i have 7 siblings i definitely know about invasion of privacy!

  21. I don't but I put something infront of my door so they can't get in, like I steal some of my brothers lifting weights and put them infront of my door.

Edit: I don't actually steal the weights, I ask him first haha.

  22. I'm 25 and I have never had a lock on my bedroom door.

What are you doing in your room that you don't want your parents to see? Besides changing clothes you shouldn't be doing anything in your room you wouldn't want your parents to see.

  23. no i  dont have a working lock but im an only child and younger then you

  24. i have one and i am 13 but that is because the house came with locks on the doors.

  25. Yes im 14 and I have one on my bedroom door, I think you should just get a lock fitted
