Yes. I am in the process of doing so with a chestnut tree. A number of years ago, I was on a camping excursion all over the Pacific Northwest and I found some chestnuts that birds had dropped on the pavement in a rest stop and were NOT cracked open. I gathered up about a dozen and brought them home. I then planted them all over my front yard near the existing tree line. I have really big pine trees all over my property. Only one germinated and started growing. It is now about 2 feet high and in its 3rd year which is about right for the rate chestnut trees grow.
