Question:

Have you had a red/orange baby?

My baby is about a week old and his skin appears to be red/orange most of the time. He was tested for bilirubin levels and that was normal. Sometimes, while feeding him - different parts of his body will turn to a normal color and then other times he seems just red all over - but it's not from crying. My doctor said that if he has some bilirubin then supplementing with a bit of formula will help along with sitting him in the sun - but I don't think that is what is causing this because at different times during the day - he's totally red/orange and others he looks fine all over. It's really bothering me although the pediatrician didn't think much of it. So, I was wondering if others have had babies like this and if there is anything to get checked out or serious concerns I should be having.

  1. it might be a thyroid condition...my little girl has hypothyroidism and her jaundus laster for 2 1/2 motnhs cause of that....ask your pedietrician to check the babys thyroid levels

  2. You mean like an oompa loompa?

No seriously, if his bilirubin levels are normal, then there's no reason to put him in the sun.  And formula is not necessary, even if he did have jaundice.

However, since his bilirubin levels are normal and he appears orange, not yellow, it isn't jaundice.

You're not feeding him any solids at a week old, right?  Orange foods can make your baby's skin appear orange.

It could just be that his skin is adjusting.  The poor guy just went through a traumatic event a week ago.  Give it another week, and if his color doesn't start improving, take him to the doctor.

  3. I am not doubting you but are you sure It is not the lighting of the room you are in.
