I have had this happen to me about 3 times now. I leave a tip and when I check my bank statement the tip amount has had a "1" mysteriously placed in front of it, looking like I tipped $15 instead of $5. In my opinion, that is theift!!!

  1. Don't assume it was on purpose.  i'm not saying you have sloppy handwriting but sometimes it is hard to really determine what the numbers people have written are.  also make sure you are adding correctly..The only number the server is supposed to go by is the total you have on the bottom of the slip...so if your check is 21.00 b4 tip you write a $5.00 tip but then put $30.00 for the total the server is getting $9.00...you agreed to a $30.00 total..

Just understand mistakes happen and we servers have to go a million miles an hour to make a few bucks.

If however there is something wrong call the restaurant and tell them your situation...be nice about it and  more than likely you'll get your money back...it would be helpful to have your copy of the reciept though..and if the server is intentionally adding one's in front of her tips then they will deal with her.

  2. One word-fraud.  Or do you like theft by deceit better?  Or it could also in some courts be considered borderline identity theft.  Baby that is a crime.  Call the restaurant and get that theif fired before he/she takes a vacation to Aruba on your credit card!!

  3. That most definitely is! What I do is call the place, tell them the time and day you were there and describe what the server looks like, then tell them how they purposely changed the tip.

This is why I save all my receipts now. I've had gas stations purposely charge me twice and servers increase their tip. It's shady I tell you! And I refuse to let them get away with it!

  4. You were robbed dude.  Go back and complain to the owner because youre probably not the only person that waiter/waitress pulled that c**p on.

When I pay with credit card and add a tip I always total up the price with tip and circle it on their copy & mine so I know what i paid.

  5. I agree that is theft. I heard of it happening a few times to people. I guess to be on the safe side its best to pay cash at restaurants theres not just the risk of them adding on to the tip but the risk of them stealing your cc number.
