I have had 3 kids and never had this procedure done. Have u ever had your membranes stripped and did it work for? If my doc doesnt mention it then if i ask her to do it for me will she? I'm pregnant #4 and have always been induced with either pitocin or cervidil. so wanting to try a new approach this time around (if it really works). Pls share your experience with this procedure...Thanks.

  1. My midwife told me the following:

stripping membranes will only work if you're having irregular contractions and are somewhat dilated.  She said you should only do the procedure if you just need a "jumpstart".

I had been having hard contractions for a few days, but they wouldn't ever get regular.  I was dilated to 3 with my 3rd baby.  She stripped my membranes at 9 a.m. and my daughter was born 4 hours later.

The procedure is pretty uncomfortable, yes, but it only takes a few seconds.  Induction by pitocin is MUCH, MUCH worse.  I had to be induced with my 5th when my water broke without contractions.  9 1/2 hours later, an epidural that didn't take, and pushing for 2 1/2 hours later, my last son was finally born.

Good luck and Congrats on baby #4

  2. I had it done.  It was intensely painful for a moment, then sore for the rest of the day.  Nothing happened.  I was induced a week later.

It starts labor 1 out of every 4 tries.  I have heard that if you have s*x after having it done, the sperm helps move things along in many cases.

  3. It really works - or it's going to help. It's not dangerous, not risky and every thing you can do is good.

Have you tried s*x, nipple stimulation, walking, etc... too? These are huge helps in encouraging labor!

  4. I was not aware of this procedure until my nurse told me my doc could do it. She didn't really tell me what would happened so when he did it I was like "what the h**l are you doing?!!!!" LOL It didn't hurt as much as it was just a lot of pressure and I wasn't expecting it. So as I was going home from my appointment I started having contractions. So from 8pm on the 7th till 6am on the 9th I was still contracting and was scheduled to be induced that day. I went into the hospital and got everything going. They told me that they were going to give me the smallest dosage of pitocin just to keep my contractions at a steady rate but that my body was pretty much doing everything it needed to do. I had my son at 2:28pm that afternoon. So the procedure does work, I just don't know how often...but it def worked for me.

  5. Yes, I had mine stripped with my son and it didn't do anything. lol Seriously. Nothing happened. Oh well. I was already 3 cm dialated when the dr. did it, and I went in 5 days later and had my water broken (instead of pitocin) and had him 4 hours later. Good luck to you! It probably does work for a lot of people, or they wouldn't do it I guess. lol

  6. I HAVE AND IT DIDN'T WORK FOR ME AND HE HURTS LIKE h**l

  7. I had it done...and it didn't really work. And it isn't the most enjoyable thing in the world either. I'd rather be induced w/ pitocin.
