Have you heard of Catalonia and if so what do you know about it?

I live there and the natives think it's really well known in the rest of the world. I am dubious about this and so would like to establish what people in the rest of the world, or at least Europe, actually do know and think about it.

  1. Yes I have heard of it. I realise they don't speak Castillian Spanish in the Barcelona area.

  2. I had an enjoyable holiday there this summer. It is not generally known as a semi-independent region of Spain. Barcelona, though, is world famous. It is keeping it's identity alive, with Catalan spoken as the first language.

  3. I don't know too much about it, but I think it's a region in Spain that doesn't like to be associated with Spain.  It likes to think it has its own unique culture and tradition, distinct from Spain, and is more about people and community spirit than getting rich.

Barcelona is a good advert for Catalonia, as it is perhaps the only top class football club in the world where fans have a real say.  They don't have commercial sponsors on their football shirts, and UNICEF is the first name to appear on the front of their shirts - a charity.

  4. It's a part of Spain - but that's about it really.

I don't know that much about other European countries either though :-(
