  2. Out walking, bundled tightly against one cold, windy afternoon in 1998, pissed off at something I can't recall specifically but probably linked to my deteriorating relationship with a co-worker whose religious proselytizing had become increasingly annoying, it occurred to me that the notions about human origins and the evolution of technology that form the basis of our understanding of the nature and role of our species not only on our own planet but within the vast complex of the cosmos, essentially both our science and our religion, were fundamentally flawed.

I'd read and written extensively about alternative origins of our science and religion, but mostly as speculative fiction, with little evidence to support my ramblings until that day.

Upon my return to the office I googled Sumeria.  That evening I purchased William Bramley’s The Gods of Eden, it being the only work on the shelves of my local bookstore addressing the topic.  Soon afterward, I read Samuel Kramer's History Begins at Sumer, listing 39 aspects of civilization that remarkably all appeared in a relatively narrow band of time in the area between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, just north of the Persian Gulf.  In quick order I digested all of Zecariah Sitchin's books, proceeded through the writings of Graham Hancock and Charles Hapgood, revisited Chariots of the Gods, tracked down Erich Von Daniken's subsequent research, and otherwise spent every waking moment for about two years researching alternative theories about where we came from and how we got here.  At one point I had 60 binders of material I printed from the web (my office PC a seemingly inappropriate home for such documents, though the office printer no less so for their reproduction), dozens of videotapes, and eventually acquired a new computer to dedicate to my research and recycle the paper.

My distorted spine was for once not a detriment as it allowed me the excuse of spending my time horizontal and absorbed in my reading.  My conclusion: the extraordinarily rapid social and technological development of what had theretofore (5000-6000 years ago) been a “primitive” Mesopotamian culture provided a “smoking gun” and substantial evidence of intervention by a higher-order civilization, further supported by the near-simultaneous “evolution” of high-tech (for the time period involved) civilizations in Egypt and the global distribution of cultural artifacts and geodetic markers resembling those of the “Fertile Crescent”.

At the core of my investigation, not to mention Sitchin’s were the Annunaki.  Something happened in those distant eons that defied conventional wisdom, yet it is supported not only by the historical record left by the Sumerian, Assyrian and Babylonian cultures, but by the core belief system of the Hebrew, Christian and Islamic religions as dictated by their “book of books”, the Old Testament of the Bible, which we now know to have been greatly influenced by the “mythology” shared during the Babylonian captivity.

As to your original question: the Anunaki and the planet of Niburu.  As you’ve no doubt gathered from what I’ve written so far, I have heard of them.

My opinion is that a thorough scientific explanation of Nibiru is still inconclusive.  However, it’s gaining credibility based on modern observations and calculations, particularly those of astronomers Dr. John Matese (US) and Dr. John Murray (UK).  These, among others, are eloquently described by Andy Lloyd in his book Dark Star Theory, Planet X Evidence (2005).  In short, we may be a component of a binary star system that could possibly support life on a planet orbiting that companion star.  Dr. Murray’s orbital dynamics mirror those of Sitchin’s “12th Planet” to an astonishing degree.  The existence of such a planet provides an elegant explanation for the ability of intelligent life to traverse the vast distances of intersolar space without the incomprehensible technology of required to travel between galaxies.

I do not subscribe to theories of interdimensional transit, psychic connections to lost civilizations (although I am fascinated by the possible existence of a lost “mother culture, i.e. Atlantis, destroyed in a global cataclysm but with social and technological remnants scattered across the globe).  There are a lot of bizarre theories that, as Carl Sagan put it (describing Von Daniken) “poison the well” for serious research.  There are hacks and  preposterous conspiracy theories that combine pre-Columbian settlement of North America by the Knights Templars, the search for the Loch Ness monster, Christ’s kids in Kashmir or Arizona and the hidden gunman on the grassy knoll in Deely Plaza.

Needless to say, I prefer to treat those as separate issues for others to deal with.

I’ve met with Erich Von Daniken and have found him to be not only a sincere and enthusiastic explorer but a more credible researcher than most critics make him out to be.  I respect his views on widespread ET contact in ancient times, yet find it more comfortable to support the scientific underpinnings of Sitchin’s research, particularly his focus on Nibiru, the Annunaki and the explosive nature of Sumer’s rise.

Did the Annunaki make repeat visits to earth in our “prehistory” for purposes of geological research?  Certainly believable.

Did they derive the human race as a “worker race” via genetic manipulation of indigenous terrestrial species and their own DNA?  I'm not convinced.

Did they induce a social upheaval by sharing agricultural, architectural, medical and other technology, in particular introducing the concept of recording history via a written record and education in creating that written record?  Here’s where their influence is at its most credible.

Did they extend this influence worldwide through their own internal disputes and the ability to navigate and travel across oceans?  Hapgood’s research points to somebody having done that, and if they were here at all, they are a likely source.

Were the Annunaki real?  I'm starting to believe so.  Are they still?  Their survival since that intervention in "biblical" times seems suspect.

Was/is Nibiru real?  The evidence is pointing in that direction.  Nibiru's orbit will bring it back within our sight, eventually.

The biggest question seems to be: how will we ever know for sure?  The war in Iraq has undoubtedly destroyed evidence.  However, much was buried for millenia and much more surely remains so hidden.

One last liitle piece of Annunaki lore: Nibiru's orbit is approximately 3600 earth years.  Now think of our own time-keeping system (60 seconds x 60 minutes= 3600 seconds in one hour).  Guess where it originated?  Oh, and theose 360 degrees in a circle?  Same place.
