I live in South Africa. For the last three to four months our country has been rocked by the violent attacks on refugees (mostly people from Zimbabwe, Somalia, Mozambique and Nigeria). The media covered the events on a daily basis and it was the main story in every newspaper for weeks on end. Now I am wondering . . . how, if at all, did the media cover these attacks in your country? Please supply links to articles if possible.

  1. Haven't heard anything here in the States

  2. We always kind of hear bits and peices about violence in that area but nothing specifically for a long time. The primary focus of the media these last few days has been on the Russian-Georgian conflict. Really sorry to hear about it from you.

Its kind of like what they just said in this european news article I was reading: "Wars are often overlooked unless there is a major contender". Reffereing to the Georgian - South Oseitan conflict. They had been fighting before Russia moved in but no one knew about it. Not saying that South Africa is not important, but militarily I guess people don't care. Kind of cruel world.

  3. I havent heard word one about it, SHAME on us.

  4. The fact that neither these people nor myself have heard of it is the relationship between geopolitics and the media. Often people don't care about what's going on in other countries unless it could mean a threat to their own. It's not right, but it's true. The newspapers and television news cater to appease the small minded and imperialistic people that make up a high percentage of their audience.
