  1. It means cell phones are turning into miniature computers.  Unless theres some diamonds encrusting the casing I've never heard of a 5000 dollar cell phone.  Iphones and other PDAs are around 400.  As for what people spend their money on American's have never been particularly smart.  Why has the average television screen size in people's living room more than doubled in the last 5 years?  They got cheaper, but instead of saving money people upgraded.  Why are there still people who spend 3000 a year on cigarettes without putting anything in their IRAs?

  2. It says that people's priorities are out of wack. They complain about $4/gal gas while they talk on their $500 Treo 700p.

  3. It seems that's a lie. Where's your source?

If it's true, it either means there are people out there who have enough money to pay, or people are spending recklessly. If the former, it means those people are recession-proof. If the latter, we'll probably be seeing more foreclosures in the near future.

  4. It says that there are some very rich people in the world who don't know how to spend their money.

Generally speaking, people who can spend $5000 on a cell phone are less concerned with rising gas prices, and may be making money on the rising prices through commodity investments and such.
