Question:

Have you noticed the lack of manners and courtesy in teenagers?

In most high schools, do you ever hear of a majority of the student population opening doors for each other and helping out each other in the hallways? How often does someone see that kind of courtesy in high schools?

The main question I am trying to get to is: is it a good or bad thing that our youth doesn't have the common courtesy they had several generations ago?

  1. I was a teenager not long ago... I was raised to be polite and respectful, and I pride myself on my class and tact. But...I still slip up sometimes. I don't always think that people want to be rude, maybe they just weren't taught to be polite. I think also that kids are very standoffish because they still haven't learned who they are- maybe they want to be tough, maybe they want to be cool, whatever. Politeness is not always perceived as tough or cool. They'll grow into themselves, and in the meantime let them see people's bad reactions to their rudeness.

  2. The generations of the past are just that. Most people as they grow older tend to view the past in a much more favorable way than it really was. It's no different, except we have more civil rights now.

I think you are just afraid of black culture which is predominant right now.

  3. Unfortunately ours has become a selfish society. It's rare to see _ANYONE_ hold open a door for someone else..   For those who DO do that I praise you!

  4. Newsflash: It's all of humanity regardless of age.

  5. I really do not notice that around here. Although they may or may not hold doors for the next person, I blame that on another issue. I find most, (not all) of the teens around here are general polite and respectful.

Like bad cab drivers, the few bad ones and most are hard working good people, stick out and reflect badly on the others. Same with "professional truck drivers" CDL type. Most are professional, some are not.

Back to the door story, around 20 years ago I was in a position of travel and always tended to hold the door for the next person. More often then not at the time, the professional young women were insulted and some even said to me, "You think I can not get my own door?" or words very close to that.

Sometimes you simple can not win :)

  7. Its common everywhere not only with teenagers. We can't persuade people to do something they do not believe with their hearts. Just do the courtesy stuff yourself and never give up displaying it to others, hopefully the trend will catch on. And enjoy the fuzzy feeling you get inside after doing something nice, even if you don't get any praise for it. I've been yelled at for suggesting some girl to give up her seat to an elderly.

  8. i have also noticed this. when i say god bless you when they sneeze they dont even say thankyou, it's rude.

  9. I don't know what high school you went to ... but holding doors and helping each other out has NOTHING to do with the lack of manners and courtesy ... just cause ur too lazy to open the door urself doesn't mean we're bad like come on .... us teens have other ways of being courteous ... as in if ur in a fight will we have ur back .. will we keep secrets instead of spreading em etc... so forget holdin doors

  10. I call BS.  I'm a younger person, not quite a teen anymore but close, and whenever I'm leaving a store or something I ALWAYS hold the door for older ladies.  Always.  Do you know how often they tell me Thank You...?  Not very often at all!!  Do I keep doing it anyway?  You betcha.  It's how I was raised.

  11. True, Killer Cat, but the current generation of kids are the products of dope-smoking, worthless slackers from 70s.  They would have been better off if they had been raised by wolves.

  12. People do that at my school >_>? maybe its just your school?

  13. People who don't have manners drive me nuts. How hard is it to say "please" and "thank you" every now and then? I don't see it too much in my school, but when I'm out and about I definitely notice the lack of manners and respect, especially towards adults. Honestly, it's ridiculous. And "time's changing" isn't an excuse for poor behavior. Humans should have transcended animalistic behaviors and should attempt to be civilized towards one another. That is, in fact, what makes us human.

  14. this is the 21st century things change. a while ago it use to be "inappropiate" to show your ankels lol like a hundred years ago but waterver

  15. Open doors for people? Adults do that?

  16. It's not good, it's sad.

  17. It is bad and they think I am evil when I let them know about it. I am still going to let them know about it though.

  18. I agree with Zombie Killer Cat. Don't blame it on teenagers. Teens are in a very odd state, they are molded by the people that influence them. Teens are rude because that is the way they were brought up. People are rude all over the place.

Anyways, teenagers at my school are actually pretty nice. Sure you get those few douchebags, but normally most of them are nice.

  19. It's not a good thing, but it goes away as they get older.  Teens have to have a crappy attitude in order to be cool and fit in, but once life starts kicking them in the ***, their attitudes improve.

  20. common courtesy.  h**l teenagers (not all ) are downright rude.  I was watching the news tonight.  They got a police on video tape yelling at a teenage skateboarder.  The kid is calling the cop dude etc and being rude to him and not obeying his orders.  No what happened,  They suspended the cop.  Yep that is really showing our kids how to conduct themselves.

  21. Bad thing.

Common Courtesy is a key to a happier life.  Try smiling at someone in the hall and complement their shoes/sweater/hat, or whatever.  You'll make their day and you AND them will be happier for it.  Honest.
