Have you or has your child been held back?

My son is in 4th grade and having difficulties in school. The teacher wants to hold him back and I am very undecided, agreeing with some of the areas and not in others. I would like your experiences, either if you were held back or your child, and if this was beneficial or not and why? Thanks!

  1. I was held back in second grade. I missed ALOT of school that year due to illness therefore I was very behind. It was very beneficial to me in a lot of ways. I was able to get a better grasp on concepts and mature a little bit more. However once I entered middle and high school I was always so much older than everyone else and hence experienced everything a little sooner (ie puberty) which wasn't much fun. So it has its good points and bad points.

  2. my son was born end of December so he was only 4 when it was time for school to start.

I held him back in kindergarten and don't regret it at all.  He still struggles with some subjects but I feel everything would be worse if I hadn't held him back (currently in grade 2)

Even in grade 4, I probably wouldn't hesitate because you want them to succeed and not continue to struggle into HS.

  3. no neither one has been held back,,

  4. I was held back in kindergarten because i did not talk to ANYONE, and i was sooo much smaller then all the other kids. I thought it helped me a lot because since I did a grade over I got to understand the material much better!

  5. My nephew was held back in 3rd grade and it was the best thing for him. My sister was also worried. he is now in 6th grade and has been on honor roll ever since. your son just needs to catch up a little. you shouldn't worry about how he would feel with his friends moving along, he will adjust fine and feel much more confident in himself.  My Nephew has no regrets nor does his mother. I would say go for it. You wouldn't want him to be held back in junior high. Let him grow another year while in elementary school. he will be OK mom.

  6. My 8 yr old is now repeating the 2nd grade.. He had some problems last year academically and although they were saying that they couldve put recommendations for him to pass, me and my husband decided it would be best for him to repeat the year. Let me tell you I DO NOT regret it in any way! My son just got his report card and is doing so good!! He is struggling a bit in one area which is comprehension but the teacher is not worried because t has improved a great deal from where he was in the beginning of the year!

If you feel he should be held over, I think you should do it now at a younger age as apposed to an older age.. Just my opinion! Good luck with whatever you decided!
