  1. Pollen, like many, worry that by freely moving so many genes into new genomes we may create unexpected hazards for our selves.  Consider the damage we have done by using huge amounts of DDT or developing technologies that use poisons like copper or gold mining.

Horizontal movement of genes has happened since the beginning of cellular life but we now have the potential of increasing the rate of transfer beyond anything that has ever happened by chance events. There will be mistakes and people as well as the environment will be injured as well as benefited. So I agree that with our rush to use a tool before researching it fully will lead to great folly but may also push people to realize there is more to be considered as stock holders than the initial monetary payout.

Companies push for products. They are not held responsible for cleaning up if the product does more harm than good so they proceed to pressure researchers for marketable results.

I think Pollen is asking us to try to balance the high cost of research against the cost of cleaning up. It might be better to allow the researcher ample time to ponder & publish papers before rushing out to market with the first possible product in order to recoup just the cost of development. Let us research more to try to limit the number of clean ups and their severity so there is no hidden additional cost in lives as well as money. This is a new field to us so lets take the time to be cautious and learn as much as possible so we can predict the outcomes effectively and prevent harm.
