Have you read this African American novella?

I'm looking for a novella I read in black history literature, but I can't remember the name. I hope someone can help me. It is a novella about a boy that is living in foster care. One day the social workers come to move him to a different family. He ends up running away and joins this gang. I don't know who wrote it. Some writers we discussed at the time were Ernest Gaines, James Baldwin, and Richard Wright. Do you know who wrote this story and the name of the novella? Thanks.

I really tried to find the book because it sounds so familiar. I looked through the bibliographies of Ernest Gaines, James Baldwin, and Richard Wright and none of them wrote this book.
