Have you received a letter from Michael Phelps?

I'm writing a letter to him and enclosing a photo for him to sign.

I know that he himself may not autograph it but I don't really care.

If you sent him a letter and something for him to sign, what did you get back? Just the autographed item? Does he write anything on it?

Yup, he sent back a signed photo and a short note that read "Thanks Michael, it's nice having you as a fan."  Not much, and I'm not entirely sure that he wrote the note himself, but still, I count myself lucky for getting his autograph and a short, if not personally written, note.

I could probably get a lot for his autograph, but then again, it's not really about money; it's about supporting Michael in his Olympic endeavours, and I've decided to keep his autograph.  Maybe I'll frame it :-)

Of course, that was before the Olympics; he might be quite a bit busier now that he's getting so many sponsors.

Yea, I sent him a letter about a year ago with a photo enclosed, and just this january i got a letter from him! He had signed my picture and it came with a newsletter abou what he is up to. I framed it :) I think his autograph is worth a lot now, since he has 8 golds in one olympics :)) Good luck! Just be patient..

If it's e-mail, I'm afraid he'll have to print the item that you sent first before signing it and then scan it back. That is, if you know his e-mail address. However, if it's plain old-fashioned mail, it's really hard to predict, especially since he's an olympic superstar. If he does not reply to you at all, don't bother fussing about it. He's really busy right now. If you're lucky enough to get a reply and a signed autograph, then you know he fully appreciates you as a fan and would love to get more letters from you. He might as well start a fan club.
