I have a daughter that is oppositional defiant. Someone suggested that we should find out more info about the James Lehman program, "Total Transformation"... Has anyone heard of this or better yet, has anyone tried it? Thanks in advance!

  1. Labels, labels, labels.   Sometimes I think adults need have the labels put on them and not the kids.

Was she trained to get her own way all the time?  Perhaps that contributed to her oppositional defiance.  One way at home and then when they are tossed into social situations, they expect the same treatment and if bold enough have no respect for authority either.

It's much harder to UNDO the behaviour than to discipline them properly so they can integrate into society (school) and have it not be such a cultural shock to them.  I see how some children talk to their teachers and it's unbelievably rude.  They didn't get to be like that all by themselves.

On the other hand your child could just have "s.p.u.n.k" and if the teacher is a royal ******, which some most certainly are, and has no tolerance for someone who is perhaps more needy for one reason or another, and if she is being abusive to the child in some respect, kids pick up on that, and some kids with s.p.u.n.k (why is this word being bleeped?) fight back.

I suggest you take a good hard look at the relationship with your teacher/child at school.

There are kids who are holy terrors, and who are just spoiled and bratty, and honestly teachers aren't dumb and can put two and two together and figure out where the problem originates.  Some children have learning disabilities but honestly I think kids are being categorized and dumped into these newly created buzz-words like ADHD, and now Oppositional Defiant....OMG it seems everyone is out to capitalize on the demise of the family unit and at the expense of the children.  I can see why some would take the easy way out and pray parents just sedate their kids.  Many seem to appreciate the suggestion and do exactly that too.

  2. I've never heard of it! But maybe you should try it! At least find it and see whats it like! Good luck~!~!  How old is she!

  3. I have a son (Matthew - 12 yrs old) that was diagnosed with ADHD and oppositional defiance disorder. I think these labels are a load of c**p. He was acting out because his grandma (who lived with us) was dying. Has something happened recently that may have caused your girl some kind of emotional trauma? If not, then she is probably just trying to get some attention. Try spending some special one-on-one time with her.

  4. I have never heard of the program; it might be good.  Some children have a stronger will than others.  This isn't necessarily a bad thing; depends on how it is used and controlled.  Strong willed people can accomplish great things.

Try some of the books by Dr. James Dobson (I know he is political, but his parenting books are on the level and top notch - treats the child with dignity and respect):"The Strong Willed Child" is an excellent book and has an available workbook.  You can get this at most bookstores, or the public library.
