Hello! I'm an exchange student in Sydney and I wanted to know if it is possible to work as a fruit picking for just two weeks or so.. and also if you need to have a work visa to do it. Which one do you think is the best fruit to pick? some people have told me that it is strawberry.

Thank you :)

  1. First to do the fruit picking or any paid legal job in Australia you must have a tax file number. And to get this number you must have a visa that allows you to work, it can be a working holiday visa, temporary work visa or etc. The student visa allows you to work, but probably not in the fruit picking, because in the fruit picking you work a lot of hours per week and the student visa has limit fro weekly work hours. Finally, the fruit picking usually is a well paid job, but be prepared because it can be a real hard work. And with you have problems with insects, don't try fruit picking!!

    Good Luck Mate!

  2. Try something else if you can......................its back breaking work, hard, hot & conditions from some employees very bad.

I worked out at Laidley in Queensland a couple of years back did a 70hr week for $600 take home pay. The pay at the time was $12 hr after tax $9 - 10. It was heartbreaking sad to see all that work added up to a measly pay.

It may have gone up ? you"d best check up first before you make the trip ?

I"d suggest you stay to the cities for work as they always pay better. Do waitressing or hospitality work in the cities.

To conclude, that back breaking work motivated me to go back to UNi and finish two degrees................. I get better payed work now.

  3. Mmm...... pick one eat one pick one eat one

It all depends on the season and if the fruit is ready to pick. You do need a tax file number.
