Question:

Have you tried the citronella bark collar?

I am thinking of buying one. My dog barks at all the dogs walked on our street. She is disturbing the neighbour which is horrifying. We have tried the bark collar (zap kind.) It works but we have gone through two batteries, so it hasn't trained her. She does get excecise, time spent with us, and outings. It isn't a boredom thing, its because of the other dogs. My neighbour sleeps in the day. I am 8 months pregnant and can't take the stress. Thank you!

  1. Personally i don't agree with using these types of collars to fix behavior issues.

Please take a look at these articles on barking and training I think they will be very helpful for you.

  2. It sounds to me like your dog was not properly desensitized in his first 6 months of life. Barking is a normal  thing dogs do, so as their parents it is our job to teach them the desired thing to do. The easiest way is bring a squekie toy on the walk with you... if the dog barks sqeak the toy as to get him to pay attention to you, get him to sit and treat and praise the calm non barking behavior. this is really easy to do from a younge age. you pretty much want the dog to see a "distraction" as an  opprotunity for love...so anytime he could be barking he goes into an automatic sit and looks at you... its priceless!!

  3. It's difficult to get them not to do something that is very instinctive.

Fortunately my dog did respond to the zap training, he will still bark but when I say "Quiet" he does shut up.  But squirrels drive him nuts.

You might also try putting up a barricade where he can't see other dogs passing by and it will also muffle the sound.

  4. yessss! i have a dog and she too barks at everyone! she has one of those really loud and high pitched barks too. its trained her perfectly. we put it on her and she barked once and got sprayed and shut up for hours, then we got to the point were we just left it on her but not on and she was quiet the whole time, its good too because its not harmful to her!

  5. You may also want to consult a trainer or certified behaviorist to change the behavior. The collar is only a tool-not a permanent fix for the behavior. Good luck!
