  1. I was sent there on a job for 6 weeks at the  Naval Air Station Sigonella.  The stores officer at the supply warehouse was a local civilian who was also a Baptist preacher who had a church near Motta Sant' Anastasia and we went there for services (he preached in Italian and an American translated.  Singing hymns in Italian made them that much more beautiful, especially OPEN THE EYES OF MY HEART).  I was able to drive around the island on my off time.  Once I figured out the dialect (I speak Sardinian dialect of Italy), it was a lot more enjoyable.  Catania...I got lost there more than once.  Good thing the car I rented was a Fiat Punto...would have enjoyed a Smart car.

Lots of mountains, beautiful beaches...I couldn't find any right off where I could 'sun my buns.' Friendly folks.  Co-worker's grand mother was from near Palermo and we drove down to the village she was from and actually got to meet some of his relatives.  I had to act as an interpreter because he spoke no italian.
