Have you went to a different country during your high-school or after-high school years (around 16-20) just to learn a new language in a different country. How old were you and how was it?

Wouldn't it be disruptive to your studies because it disrupts either your regular high-school education or university. Also when you go there, you would not have adequate knowledge of the language to communicate effectively until after a while.

Was it beneficial?

  1. I went to Italy to learn Italian. I bought myself some CD's hat were supposed to help me learn the language a few months before I actually went on the trip. Also, I went durring the summer break(may-august) for 3 years. It was my sophmore, junior and senior year of high school. So I guess I was about 14 when i first went there.

  2. You are really giong to struggle with a foreign language if you can't get English right.

It's "Have you 'gone' ", not "Have you went".

Going to another country to learn the language, barring other activities, will land you in an intensive program. I went to Sweden, and the intensive course was 40 hours per week, for 12 weeks. I became "proficient" in Swedish after eight weeks.

In order to become fluent in a language, it takes up to seven years of immersion.

Studying abroad did not disrupt my higher education, as I took university classes after the intensive language course was finished.

  3. I want to go to Japan!
