Question:

Have you worked at Kohl's or a similar department store?

I'm in my last semester of college, and it looks like my schedule is open enough for a part-time job. The Kohl's in my town is hiring. I'm thinking about applying.

What should I know about Kohl's, or large department stores in general, before applying? I have not worked much retail, and only at smaller places.

If you have worked there or somewhere like it, what did you like most? What did you not like?

Another thing: Do places like this usually start part-time workers out at minimum wage or a little more?

Thanks for your input!

  1. yes, my first day was today and my last will probably be toworrow/.

i have eleven years retial experience and they are paying me 30 cents above minimum wage,

I'm not impressed by any means, in fact i think they are another wal-mart.

As soon as i walked in the door there was all these people asking me for help, it was my first day, i hadn't even clocked in yet.

they won't give anyone other than management a shift longer than five hours, more like 10 to 25 hours per week.

there trianing is like 70% evolved around thier credit card, they want you as a cashier to get one for ever ONE hour worked, I have been great at getting credit apps, but i can tell you that is IMPOSSIBLE, I've worked for other major department stores.

mos tof the people i talked to had worked thier for one or two months also.

    Doesn't appeal to me.

  2. I used to work at Target. It was an ok job.  Kohls is slightly different but mostly the same. The thing I liked most about Target was I met some really nice people, and developed continuing friendships with a couple of them even after I was gone. The thing I did not like was it just got boring after awhile, the work I mean. I guess retail can be like that. Thats why I left and find something else in manufacturing. Usually they might start a little higher than minimum wage but not much. I guess it depends on your previous work experience. Good luck.
