Haven't received 2007 Tax return, what to do?

My status shows there's a mismatch of my SSN with my name. I called in to correct it, was told a letter has been mailed to me and my wife. We mailed the letter back two months ago. The online status hasn't changed since then. We went to the local IRS office, was told there's nothing she can do. We called, was told it need at least 8 weeks to process. This is driving us mad...

We haven't received our tax rebate either.

Questions:

1. Is there a deadline, after which date we are not eligible to receive refund? and tax rebate?

2. Is there anything else we can do?

It has been more than 6 months since we filed our return.....

  1. It doesn't matter how long ago your initial return was filed - it isn't considered filed until the correction is made, then it takes 12-16 weeks after that to get your refund.

You can file for three years after the original due date and still get your refund, so no problem there.  The rebates all have to be mailed by the end of 2008, but you should be OK there also.

  2. The deadline for the rebate is October 15. The deadline for the refund is April 15, 2011.

You have already filed, so you are within the deadline.

The IRS can be very slow. It is sometimes hard to tell if something got overlooked or it is normal processing time. I certainly couldn't tell you that. This year they have been especially busy because of the rebate.

Try again in 2 months, if you haven't seen anything yet.

The good news is that you might get interest.

  3. If there was indeed a mismatch, don't expect a stimulus payment at all--although it will be available as a credit on next year's return.
