Having Linksys router problems? Any help?

I have..

Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54GL.

Time Warner Internet

PC Desktop/Laptops

Here's the story..

I've had this Linksys router for a few years now, and it's ALWAYS worked fine with no problems. The all of a sudden the other day my internet shows there's no connection, when I pull up the Internet Browers on my main desktop. The main connection from the modem goes straight to the Router and the desktop computer is plugged (wired) into one of the ports. I also use 2 other laptops in the house that connect to the Router wirelessly and they have always worked for me. But for some reason now, nothing will connect to the Router; even my Playstation 3 that connects wirelessly.

Once this occured, I went to connect the Modem straight to the desktop computer to make sure it wasn't just my Internet Provider having problems, but that wasn't the case. My Internet pulled up fine when the Modem and desktop computer hook up directly (wired). Once I found this out, I hooked everything back up to the Router and went to my Internet Explorer, and keyed into the URL bar "192.168.1.1" to pull up the security/network settings for the Linksys Router. After keying in the IP Address, it prompts me for the 'Username" and "Password" in order to get to the Settings. So I key in the normal Username and Password that I always use and it shows that it's INVALID. I've gotten on many times with the same Username and Password and it has always worked fine but now it says it's incorrect Username or Password. So then I try my regular Username and use "admin" for the Password and it let's me in. Once I am in I notice that all my Opened Ports are cleared and all the original settings I had were back to default or had been erased. So this leads me to think that this could be the main reason why nothing can connect through the Router now.

Is there certain Settings I need to change in order to allow all my machines (computers/playstation) to connect with the Router? or.. Can anyone give me any advice or help?? If you have any questions that could help me solve my problems just ask, and I'll try my best to answer them.

I greatly appreciate the help it. It's truly a frustrating situation.

Thank you!!!

  1. Someone most likely hacked in.

Take your router, and in the back, there's a little restart button, take a pin and press that for 30 seconds, it should restart and it should work. If not uninstall your modem from your computer and reinstall (the cd that it comes with) it and start up the whole process again. I've done it before after someone hacked in and I haven't had a problem since.

If your cd drive on your desktop doesn't work, do it from a laptop. It doesn't matter where the cd gets installed as long as it does.

  2. I have a linksys too, and although it is dependable, occasionally it hoses itself and needs to be reset.

I export all of my settings to a 'config' file for just this reason. There is a utility to do this. Look in the Administration tab in the router settings (if memory serves).

Sometimes simply unplugging and rebooting the router for a few seconds takes care of the problem.

Other times I have have to hold the little button down and reset the router to it's factory defaults and then Import my config file back in to restore to all of my settings.  Again, there is a utility to do this.  Look in the same place as before.

    Hope this helps.

  3. try pulling the plug on your router and modem and wait a little bit, then plug it back in. I also have linksys and i get a lot of problems with it this should help. but i think somebody probably reset your router and that's why everything got deleted you gotta go through the whole process of adding your router again with your ps3 search for ip then put in your key again and reopen your ports for each comp.

  4. linskys is not really a good company and i had the same problem i had my linskyes for 3 years didn,t have a problem out of it and just all of a sudden it quiet working the best thing to do is to go out and get a d link because linskyes is not really the best com[pany and thier routers only last about 2 years

  5. call linksys, they have good tech. support.

  6. your in luck im a expert did you move any furiniature or have any neighbors moved right b4 it stoped working?

  7. Sounds like a few things might have happened. If settings are "cleared out" as you say, it is a possibility that the connecting devices and/or desktop do not have the proper WEP key information entered to access the router. I would look into those settings first.

Secondly, it could simply be that the router is old and it crapped out, i havent seen that too much, but it is a possibility.

  8. My modem was doing this for awhile, I just unplugged my modem, and then my router worked fine, and if that doesn't work, I would call linksys, or your Internet Service Provider

And Linksys usually has a disk it comes with, if you still have that disk, maybe try reinstalling the linksys software, and running through the setup again.

But I would definatly alll your ISP, as they normally help out and get it fixed fast.

  9. sounds like a major glich, that or someones s******g with your router.

I would suggest just resetting all your information on it. (It sucks I know) But I don't think there's anything else you can do.

  10. Do you turn your router off when not in use?

    - Your frustration sometimes make matter worst.

    - Just restarting or complete shutdown and wait for an hour or two sometimes fixes the problem.

    - - - Now you have to reset and start from the beginning, like when you first had it.

    Be patience, good luck!
