Having an MRI scan ?

Im almost 16 now, and after a visit to my doctor for a checkup, she suggested that I went to go get an Ultrascan, as I have not had my period yet. The Ultrascan results came back today and she said that my Uterin walls were thicker, so I could be having my period, but the blood isn't coming out.. instead its staying in there?

Kind of confusing .. I know.

She booked me to go for an MRI scan. Im just really nervous, even though she said its nothing to worry about. I just have a couple questions ..

Whats it like?

What happens?

Do I have to undress?

How long does it take?

Thanks!

  1. MRI scans are painless, you may be asked to put on a gown or to wear shorts. You lay on a table and the MRI machine moves around you. They will ask you to hold your breath for a few seconds at various intervals throughout the process. And it usually takes around 35-45 mins. Plus you get to listen to whatever music you want while having the scan done.

  2. I had an MRI scan when I was 13 so I can only speak from personal experience but in my opinion, there is really nothing to worry about! Yes, it's a little uncomfortable and worrying but the technicians and nurses are really kind and will do everything they can to make you feel happy. There is also usually a system within the scanner so that you can talk to the proffesionals and vice versa. I was also able to listen to music while the scan was happening. I think mine lasted for about fifteen minutes but that may vary and no, you don't need to undress.

Hope it goes well and good luck!

  3. Dont wear jewelry or any clothes with metal on it, like zippers and buttons. wear a sports bra so you will be more comfortable. It gets hot in the machines. You may be able to leave your own clothes on, or you may just wear a hospital gown- depends on the hospital.

You are just going to be on a table with slides into a machine that looks like a tunnel. It will take a long time. If youre clautrophobic, ask for a sedative because you arent supposed to move the whole time.  It will take anywhere from half an hour to an hour and a half

  4. I have been for 2 MRI scans, one on my knee when I was 12 or 13,and one on my head when last month(I'm 15 now).

There is absolutely nothing to worry about!

It is a big tube, about 4-5ft long(I think,I didn't exactly measure it lol!!) and it is very loud!! You lie down on a table, and they put big earphones on your ears, because it's so loud. Whenever I went for one, classical music was playing,so it wasn't too bad. They then push a button and you start going into the tube. The area that is being scanned is in the middle of the tube,so all of your body won't be in the tube. There is just loud noise, and that's pretti much it!! You might feel a tingling sensation, but that's just from the high-powered magnets. To be honest,I think they are fun!!!!!

It depends on the area if you have to undress. You prob will,as it will be around your lower abdomen, but don't worry, they will give you a gown to wear!! And you can leave on your underwear!! When I went for the one on my knee,I did have to undress, but wen I got one on my head,I didn't. Remember to tell them if you have anything metal inyour body,eg.pins,plates,pacemakers,etc. and don't wear anything metal. Take off any kind of jewelery,or anything else that could be metal. This is because the magnets coulf attract them, and they could be ripped off of you,and then the fancy necklace you are wearing is broken!! If there is anything metal in your body, they will turn down the power of the magnets for saftey reasons.

It takes about 20-30mins,so it's not too long. If you are realli relaxed, you might even fall asleep!! (if you can get over the noise!!)

So,there is nothing to worry about!! Just relax and you will be just fine!!

Best of luck with your problem!!!!!

    =D

  5. Relax!  It takes @ 20-30 minutes. They do not hurt, I have even fell asleep during some of mine (LOL)  Yes you have to get undressed and wear a gown. Remve ALL jewelry. They will have you lay on a table and put this circle thing above you. The table u r on moves very slowly abd u might hear ocassional knocking.  This is normal.SOme of the p[laces I have MRI's done even supplied headphones and let u listen to what ever music u like. During the scan. DO NOT MOVE.. If u have an itch, they will itch it for you. If u sneeze- so be it and they will re do the scan, but God bless u for sneezing.

  6. MRI are very simple you have to go in remove all metal from yourself. Lay down on the table they will get you into position. This part is tough then while it is going you cannot move or you have to start over. Depending on what is being scanned it can take anywhere from 45 minutes to an 1 hour or sometimes a little longer. You don't have to undress by the way. If you are clostrophobic i suggest you tell them before hand. but basically it will circle the table your on over and over for a long time and you just lay there and be still. Pretty simple and not painfull.
