Having been to both Dublin and Cork?

rachel, most countries has its own brand of wit thats particular to 'insiders' so you cant sell Ireland on that.

I have family in Dublin, and am off to see them on Monday.

Like any city, if you just visit one street in the centre, it will be over rated and very touristy.

The old fashioned little boozers just outside the city centre, full of real Dublin people (not plastic paddys) are the best i've ever been to.

**  I didnt suggest you said you visit one street, but most people dont go further than O'Connell St and the Square and then comment!

The problem is that the Irish are out numbered by other Europeans, so if you are Irish you cant get a job that's why we all walk around looking so depressed!!

Would you say London reflects the image of the UK? Its like any other city depends on where you go & what fun you make, don't just judge Ireland on the 2 biggest cities we have, come back and try out the country side there are ton's of things to do out side of the cities. This is St. Patrick's weekend, would be one of the best times to visit Dublin, maybe next year you'll come back over & see what I mean. Happy St. Patrick's day to ya......

Ireland is fantastic, the people are fantastic.. suppose it depends on what you were looking for.. And to really experience it you need to meet up with some locals and not go the usual route ( as with anywhere in the world)  the only c**p thing is the cost of everything and maybe the weather.. but the whole nature of ireland is to have a laugh no matter what.

By the way, you obviously didn't make it to Galway... Best place on the planet.

No you're not, I went to Dublin a couple of years ago and it was the most overrated city I've ever been to in my life.

What are you looking for in a place, exactly? Dublin has a unique setting for a capital city. You are never far from the coast or the mountains there and the view of Dublin Bay from Dalkey is said to rival the view of the Bay of Naples. It is steeped in history, with wonderful museums and art galleries. The pubs there are brilliant (not all of them, I grant you ) which is why they've been copied the world over. The people are friendly and very witty but outsiders might not always get the Dublin wit. Can't blame us for that, now, can you?

I happened to love Ireland and am actually traveling back there again from the U.S. a 4th time in December.  I have to agree with you that I liked Cork better than Dublin though.  My favorite parts of Ireland were the smaller cities and countryside.  I'm facinated by all the history and archeological sites.
