Question:

Having crowns fitted?

I had a lot of crowns fitted last year and have now discovered that four of them at the bottom front of my mouth were all fitted as one piece. I feel they are tight and find them very uncomfortable. Is it appropriate to make four crowns together in one piece as distinct from fitting four individual crowns?

  1. I suspect that your teeth might already be unstable. Its attachment to alveolar bone might already be very loose.

By fitting four crowns in one piece, your biting force will be more evenly distributed. It's very similar to the concept of tooth bridges. The last teeth at each side of the crown must be the strongest ones compared to those in between. If you have it as four individual crowns, it'll only cause more pressure on each tooth when you bite or grit your teeth. This could cause your teeth to either totally fall out or become more unstable and wobbly.

  2. usually if all the crowns are joined together if they are side by side so that you can get good grip. Discomfort is due to food stuck below the crown causing periodontal problems. You need to brush & gargle properly so that food is washed away.

  3. If they were put on last year you should have "discovered" it before now.  If you aren't using dental floss then you are going to lose these teeth and some more too.  The only reason to splint teeth is to strengthen them against biting forces....united we stand, divided we fall.  You should have been shown how to clean these splinted teeth with floss threaders.  Something is wrong here!
