We use a bissell pro heat x2 machine with bissell detergent. No awful smells before cleaning downstairs carpet, just nice aroma of detergent. Daughter and boyfriend shared the room much to my distaste, recently moved out, carpet is not even 2 years old. we have cats but are mainly based downstairs, however i have caught them trespassing on odd occasions in the bedrooms!!!.

  1. sounds as if the cats may have gotten to the carpet or perhaps just something was spilled that caused the offensive odor when wet try using a carpet cleaner specifically made for pet stains and odors they work well to canel all kinds of bad smells

  2. One thing that smells fishy is old electrical insulation - it may be coincidental that you can smell it know or if you have been using a powerful machine that has overloaded the circuit that may cause it.

  3. This smell could be from the sub flooring used under the carpet. The glue in the material can give off a fishy smell when wet.

  4. When it finishes drying, if it still smells try this.

Use 50/50 white distilled vinegar and water as the shampoo, rather than the bissell stuff. The vinegar will take away the smell.

When the vinegar dries, it will NOT smell like vinegar. It just doesn't leave any smell.

  5. WELL FISH ARE VERY CLEAN.

  6. It could be your underlay & carpet has cat wee on it (sorry) or smell from the electrical appliance, glue, sounds like its brougth some smells out of it by cleaning, if it doesnt clear when dry, maybe your daughter should buy you a new carpet.

  7. Did you totally clean out the carpet cleaner before moving upstairs with it?

I've noticed that if  the carpet cleaner sits, and is not cleaned out right away ( hubby is notorious for this), it gets a fishy smell to the water.

Clean out both tanks, add fresh water and try the pet carpet shampoo....that should help.

  8. Bissell detergent is probably the cheapest and worst they could find to give you. If you use any good commercial cleaner it will be formulated to leave a pleasant aroma. You will have to visit a Janitorial Supplier (Yellow Pages). The best one I have used is 'Enhance' by Johnson Professional.
