“Having lost is better than cheating” – Red Bull
The co-owner of Red Bull Racing, Dietrich Mateschitz proclaimed that having lost the drivers' title to Fernando Alonso and Ferrari would be preferred over pushing the team drivers into ‘team orders’.
The Austrian team has announced time and again, all through the season that they would not follow team orders no matter what the situation is. And now they are caught up in a very critical condition where only team orders can assure them for the second title
of the season. The Austrian team has already packed up the Constructors’ Championship after their 1-2 finish at the Brazilian Grand Prix last weekend, however, the Drivers Championship is to be decided at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix scheduled for this Sunday.
As per the current points’ tally if the team driver, Sebastian Vettel bags a victory and Mark Webber ends at second place, Alonso will only need to finish at fourth to claim his third world title. While on the other hand, if Webber bags victory, Alonso would
have to finish nothing less than second to ensure his championship. The team would be very safe if they decide to take Webber as their No.1 driver.
However, the Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has very lucidly announced that both, Vettel and Webber will race freely. He has further added that the team would not force them into anything and looking at the situation if they would want, they can
help each other. Well, looking at the enmity and rivalry between the two everyone knows whether they would want to help each other or not.
Moreover, Mateschitz has also supported the decision of Horner saying, "Let the two drivers race and whatever will be will be… If Alonso wins we will have been unlucky. I predict a Hollywood ending, with the worst case scenario that we don't become champion
but if that's the case, we'll do it next year. Our philosophy stays the same because this is a sport and it must remain a sport."
He further condemned the way the Ferrari forced its driver, Felipe Massa, at the German Grand Prix, to hand over his victory to Alonso. Mateschitz made it very clear that he does not intend to get involved into a controversial scandal.
"We don't manipulate things like Ferrari do," he concluded saying. "The whole world condemned them after what they did in Hockenheim. But we have turned out to look like idiots because we have not acted in this way."
