Having problem with a ibm

having problem with a ibm t40 laptop, i'm installing a 80 gig HD from it's standard 30 gig HD, i did a mirror image of the drive and booted it, passed post fine then comes up with a cursor, but if i put a reg fdisk paritionwith a format drv c: (old school), it boot up to a c:promt, what do you think it is...can you help me please...
