Question:

Having problems hanging my very large framed painting?

I'm trying to hang my framed painting. I noticed that the painting doesn't hang flat. Part of the corner is curved away from the wall. It's noticeable. I think the frame is bent. I've tried to straighten it out but I'm unable too.

I was thinking about hanging the painting and tape the side that curves away down to the wall. Of course people won't see the tape. But I need really, strong tape. Any suggestions? If tape is not the solution, let me know. The painting is really huge 43" x 43". So, I'm not interested in spending a lot of money on buying a new frame. Thanks.

  1. If you are going to keep the painting there for a while I would cut a few slits in the drywall where the frame is bent.  If you can get it to lye in there it should lay flat.  As long as you don't make a huge hole in the drywall you should be able to spackle easily if you decide on a new picture.

  2. Are you hanging the painting with more than one nail? If you use two or three points of connection with the wall, you will force the frame to lay more flat. You can also tighten the wire for a little added benefit.

You could also try Velcro-type pieces to hold the corners to the wall. They come in all sizes and you can cut pieces to fit your problem.

    Good luck!

  3. With the picture hanging push on the side out from the wall, does the other side then come out? If not buy some self stick velcro apply to frame and wall at least a 3" strip let set overnight then hang picture. Velcro will let you adjust and remove the picture if you ever decide to paint

  4. the easiest way to straighten is to get a piece of steel 1/4 inch thick and about 2 inches wide have it cut 37 inches long and drill holes in it for screws then fix it along the back of  the bent side of the painting just make sure that the screws are not so long that they go through the frame.

  5. If the frame is not delicate or water-damageable, a good solution would be to submerge the frame alone in water for a day or two, then bring it out and lay it on a flat surface under something large enough to press it flat over the course of another few days to a week.  Woodbending can be difficult, but it can be done, and it is more sensible than putting a hole in your wall to counteract a bent frame.

If you're talking about the slant you get when you hang a frame, well that's just normal.  When you hang a frame, the top will stick out further, looking slightly down.  Use two or three hooks to hang the frame and they will pull it closer to the wall.
