Question:

Having trouble doing 'boat pose' in yoga class...where is my tailbone supposed to go???

I have no padding in my butt. Sounds crazy, but it's got no cush. And when I try to do 'boat pose' it hurts because it feels like I'm trying to balance on the point of my tailbone! I've tried rolling my pelvis forward...and then tried backward...to try and alleviate this. There is no getting around my tailbone! I would have to move back or forward so far that it wouldn't be the pose anymore and I would fall over. Any advice?

  1. Have you tried it while on thick layer of folded blanket, or even a couple yoga mats folded in thirds or quarters?

    What does your instructor say?

You are right to be concerned that if you adjust your hips too much you will no longer have correct alignment/form.

At risk of being too personal, perhaps your issue is basically underdeveloped glutes (gluteus maximus, i.e. butt muscles).

If you think that's possible, you may want to incorporate a glute developing excerise into your regular exercise routine.

While there may be a few yoga asanas that would help, I think the most effective exercise would be 'donkey kicks':  http://health.howstuffworks.com/glutes-e...

If you search, am sure you can find various web pages noting correct form for Boat pose, such as following from Yoga Journal:

    Good luck.
