I am 15 and i'm a little chubby. My parents want me to be in a sport, i'm very good at figure skating and gymnastics but they say i'm to heavy for that. I don't want to be in a team sport like soccer, or vollyball...etc. What are some sports that are better for heavy people? I would love to take dance, really anything but it's kind of hard when your parents aren't exactly boosting your self esteem. Thanks!

Also, how about pilates? Is that good for "bigger" people?

  1. Hiking is great because you can socialize at the same time.  You can chat with your friends, get great views and enjoy nature which is advantageous physiologically and psychologically.  You may have a group at your school but if not, google 'Hiking' and your city and you'll probably find some local groups or google Sierra Club, Outddoors Club, Meetup, and your local recreation and park district.

It doesn't matter what your weight is because you can stop and rest whenever you like, especially if you start off with beginner hikes.  It's also a really good workout and burns lots of calories.  It's a good idea to increase your endurance by starting with one or two hikes a week and building up to three a week if possible.  But even going once a week is 52 per year - a very do-able goal.

  2. That sucks that your parents don't support you :[

You should be able to play any sport you like, regardless if you're skinny or a little on the chubby side. I'm not a big sports person, but I dance a lot. (Actually, it's more like hyperventilating with rhythm, haha. I can't dance.) Swimming is really fun too. Just try to convince your parents you like doing gymnastics and skating and maybe they'll let you continue.

I found pilates a little hard for me. But you should try it and see if it works for you! :)

    Good luck

  3. Try swimming, thats a fun sport!! And it doesnt matter whether you are big or small, and its not entirely a team sport, u go to individual state also!! And its great exersize!!! You can do it!! Good luck!! I hope i helped!!!!!!

  4. Hi Lauren, The best sport for you to be in is the one that you are genuinely interested in.  Don't let your parents influence you on this.

I was a size 14/16 thru high school and was on the track team because I wanted to be.  I ran 5k fun runs on weekends and had a blast.  I was a cheerleader in junior high and in grade school I was a really good ice skater and I too loved gymnastics.  No, I was never going to make the olympic team, but I loved it, and I had a ball.

The only person who can limit your activities is YOU.

I'm still by no means skinny, but I hike a lot, and race outrigger canoes competitively.  I am a lot better at these activities than LOTS of my "skinny" or "fit" friends.

Don't ever assume you CAN'T do something. Just be you, and do your best at the things you love.  You'll be an asset to your team and you're going to have a blast.

Don't let their horrible input ruin your fun!

  5. i love palates! if you like skating though don't let being heavy stop you. if your truly good your good. maybe loose some weight and that will open up more oppertunities for sports.

  8. If your a little bit bigger just know that that doesn't always affect your athletic ability and i would say ice hockey though if you can figure skate well but skating in hockey is a little bit different than figure skating and it is dangerous but than again every sports is dangerous and if your afraid of getting hurt than you cant play any sport email me if you need more to this answer

    :)
