Question:

Having trouble in French class?

I have always made all A's... I am very serious about school and do the best I can do on everything, but French class is the first class I have ever had that has given me significant trouble. I don't know what to do! My friends that have always had lower grades than me are doing fine! I really don't understand it. I am not very motivated to learn a foreign language (especially French which I will never use) so I don't see how I could ever like this class. I am making sturdy A's in all my other courses this year and really don't want this stupid class to hurt my chances to get into UF! Help!! What can I do to understand it better?

  1. okay, i took French this year, and i think it's so fun!!! But people say that's cuz i'm lucky to have this teacher, Hull-Otinno, and she is so fun!! Okay, u will use French because:

    1) it is the second language on the Internet

2)if any of ur friends or relatives speak it, then u can talk to them without anybody knowing what ur saying.

    3) good colleges require four or more years of a second language

    4) it looks good on a job application

    5) if u ever do an exchange program to France, then u can understand lots of it, and it's a very pretty language.

for the studying part, i use an online textbook, but i can't give you the code, but you can use the online flash cards.

    HERE'S WHAT TO DO:

    go to http://www.classzone.com

click world languages, ur state, and click go

(if u want the book i use, click arizona as your state)

click on the book on the bottom left hand corner called Discovering French Nouveau! (Bleu 1)

u can use anything but the online book since i don't know the code.

    hope that helped!!!! good luck!!!!!!!!!

  2. OK. In addition to paying close attention in your class (which I'm sure you do anyway) try thinking in French. Look at things around the room and learn their French names. If you have friends who would help, try conversations in French at Recess or whenever. I'm afraid the hardest part is learning the vocabulary and how to pronounce the words. I have to say that when I was at school (a long time ago) I really enjoyed French. I have taught French on and off for 30 years. If I can help in any way, please go to my profile and email me.

Hope this helps (J'espere que cela vous aide!)

  3. Of the romance languages, French is the most difficult from the point of view of grammar complexity. But from a vocabulary point of view, French shares a tremendous amount of words with the English language. As a result you already know a good 40% of French vocabulary. No other language shares as much vocabulary with English as French does.

So French is both a very easy (vocabulary), and a fairly difficult language to learn (grammatical structure, pronunciation etc).

Maybe you're not inclined to learn languages. Just like math, arts, sports, science, or marketing, some people are good at it, others are not.

Hire a French tutor. Join a French club at school. If possible, find someone who speaks French.

    Boone chance.

  4. I'm not sure what kind of courses and qualifications you are going for, but I would suggest:

    * Reading books in French and translating them (even just comics)

    * Getting some computer software that will help you

    * Find some useful websites

    * Make up stories in French? Depends what you like doing!

    * Go to France! I'm very close so this was easy for me...

    * Watch French TV (be it cartoons, drama, films)

    * Listen and sing along to French music (try to understand the lyrics)

    * Talk to your friends in French and get them to join in

    * Have a day at home, where you can only speak French and then translate it to the person you are talking to. (You might have to take phrases written down with you)

Maybe to fit your syllabus, try making games out of studying and making your class books look really pretty so you want to look at them.

Although I personally love languages, so I can't really give you much advice on what to do. Why are you doing it if you don't like it? If you are at school, then it wouldn't matter, would it?

    Just basically...

Find something that interests you and do it in French!

x*x hope you find some good help x*x
