Having trouble sippy cup training?

I have been trying to introduce the sippy cup to my daughter since she was 6 months old. She is almost 9 months now and she is still doing the same thing... Chewing on the rubber spout. I have the spill proof and the regular. The regular on she wants nothing to do with since it comes out too fast. How can I get her to start drinking from it? thanks

  1. Had the exact same problem till we switched to the hard plastic disposable sippy cups. You can get them at walmart or toys-r-us. Started him at 6 months and gave it to him with water so he could play with it. Now at 8 months he's drinking breast milk from it at meal times. He's not quite ready to take milk when he's hungry from it- we still use the bottle, then switch it. I hate those soft spouted, no spill cups! Have you evey tried to drink out of them yourself? I did and found you had to suck really, really hard to get liquid out. If I had trouble, I know it must be impossible for my son to drink from it.

  2. The previous answer suggesting a regular cup is spot on. My daughter held hers competently from 8-9mo. There will be spillage, but. Just use water; no big deal.

  3. my 8 month old does the same thing, just chews on them.  i have three different brands and she does the same thing with each. if she does manage to get water in her mouth she spits it back out instead of swallowing it. then she smiles real big because she thinks it's funny. i've have better luck with cups. she is absolutely soaked afterward (even her back and diaper?!), BUT she does get more water in this way. I put a plastic bib with a pocket, which helps collect some of the water. it's definitely messy like someone else said, but, like you, i don't know what else to do!!

  4. I've had the same problem, been trying since 6 months and he just turned 9 months and still chews on it. I actually haven't tried more than one (I have the spill proof Avent), but a couple of my friends have the Born Free ones.  Those come out more like a bottle's flow, not too fast, but not spill-proof, either.  I'm going to try those, I just haven't gotten around to it yet.

Have you tried a regular cup? My son can drink from one, it's just... messy.  I have to hold it for him, obviously.  Of course, half the time he just plays around with that, too (blowing bubbles, l*****g the the cup, etc).

Anyhow, that's the only suggestions that I have, but I'll be checking back here to see other answers since I have the same problem!

  5. My pediatrician TOLD me that my son was going to be chewing on the spout at first. He said that's perfectly fine as he'll eventually realize that if he sucks on it, he'll get juice out. Until then, it's fine if all he does is chew on the spout. I'm sure your daughter will get the hang of it soon and will stop just chewing on it.

  6. i waited until they like cups. at 2 in half to 3 years old to use sippy cups. use the ones with the soft nipples on the top. and dont give milk in it. give water or juice. thats what theyre for. dont hold the cup up when ur babies thristy let them do it themself and they will get use to it. but thats way early to train for sippy cups.
