Having trouble uploading footage from Sony DCR-SR85 to editing program:?

Hi all, I have been trying to upload footage from a Sony DCR-SR85 Handycam, and have been having lots of difficulty. The person that gave me the footage to upload was unaware that mpeg's are horrible to edit with, but that's what the files upload as on both my Macintosh and my PC. I have tried using Adobe to upload and Final Cut, and both are having similar problems. Adobe keeps erroring when I upload footage saying "damaged or unknown file type", and then FCP's videos all come unrendered (and there are over 690 files to deal with). I am not really sure how to approach this. Does anyone know of a free batch converting program that will keep the footage pretty close to the same quality if I converted to AVI or another file type? Or is there another way to deal with mpegs? I've tried codecs too, so I know that isn't the problem.

Any help would be great. Thanks.

  1. Virtualdub can do batch conversions.  You may need to use Virtualdub-MPEG2, and I'm not sure about the audio conversion, but hopefully you can find a way.
