I'm having trouble with a few guitar chords...?

So, I have been playing electric guitar for 2 months. After lots

of practice I'm beginning to get a lot better. However there are

a few songs that I should be able to play but I can't. (i.e. running

with the devil) because I can't play some of the chords that

look kinda like this:

e]-----------------------]

B]-----------------------]

G]--------4-------------]

D]--------5-------------]

A]-----------------------]

E]---------------------------------]

I can do this perfectly fine:

e]-----------------------]

B]-----------------------]

G]--------5-------------]

D]--------4-------------]

A]-----------------------]

E]-----------------------]

But on the first one my finger that goes on the 5 mutes

the 4. On the second one I don't have to worry about that

because the 4 is closer to the nut than the 5 so I don't have

to worry about accidental muting. Any tips on not muting other

strings by mistake?

  1. I use my middle finger on the G string, and my ring finger on the D. Your index and pinky should be nowhere near the strings. If you are arching your hand up off the fingerboard, you should have no problem with muting. Your thumb should be on the back of the neck, not wrapped around the neck.

If you still have this problem, you may need to consider a guitar with a wider neck. Do you have really large hands or fat fingers? Generally, it is simply a matter of position, but I HAVE known people with giant hands who need a larger area to work with.

  2. when your finger that mutes the 4 is probably to flat on the finger board, you want to use your finger tips, try lift your finger off the finger board a little bit, it will take some time getting used to it, but once you get the hang of it, but you will do it with out thinking after a while.

  3. Make sure that your hand is parallet to the ingerboard at all times, no exception.

Otherwise, what happens is just that.. The hand is twisted and you get accidental mutings.

Keep the hand parallel and play with the ball of your fingertip. The sound will be perfect and always play behind the fret and not in the middle of the space between 2 frets.
