Havre de Grace doing extremely well in retirement at the Taylor Made Sales Agency in Kentucky
After sustaining an injury to her ligament in her right front ankle, the 2011 Horse of the Year, Havre De Grace was retired to the Taylor Made Sales Agency in Kentucky, which is under Mark Taylor. The mare seems to be doing really well in retirement.
The older division runner is in good hands and spends two or three hours a day in the paddock, which was recommended for her by Dr. Larry Bramlage, who examined her after her injury.
Trained by Larry Jones for owner Rick Porter of Fox Hill Farms, the mare is now in Kentucky but, the owner is planning to send her to Central Kentucky’s two major breeding stock auctions.
The owner has made a decision of where the champion mare will go but he told the press that:
“I know which one, but I’m not going to reveal it right now.”
He further commented:
“I’m talking to both Keeneland and Boyd Browning (the president of Fasig-Tipton), and I just would rather not say. I’d rather face them later.”
The daughter of Saint Liam, out of Carson City mare Easter Bunnette, was going to be sold privately after her retirement but, the owner decided against it and commented that the mare would only be sold if someone is willing to make a ridiculous offer.
Havre de Grace wasn’t bred to a stallion this year mainly because the breeding season was over but also because if she was sold for her broodmare potential, the new owner would prefer his or her own choice of a mate.
The owner is immensely proud of his mare as he said:
“She has an unbelievable race record, and Mark Taylor has said he’s never seen a better-looking mare. Larry Jones has said she’s the closest thing he’s ever seen to a perfect horse. She also has a pretty nice pedigree. When you put it all together, she’s the whole package.”
Over the course of her career, Havre de Grace has collected nine victories from 16 starts including the Grade 1 Apple Blossom Handicap, the Grade 1 Woodward Stakes and, the Grade 1 Beldame Invitational.
She also competed in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Classic and the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Ladies' Classic.
